  1. Most of us have the dream of becoming THE BEST. Crushing the Table.

But, what happens if we ever actually get there? ( I know, I know... we should all be so lucky as to have to deal with such a "problem". )

If you read through Daniel Negreanu's blog, I think you'll find that what happens is you get BORED.

DN regularly plays at the highest level. He has both won and lost over a million dollars in single sessions against the best poker players in the world.

The Big Game at the Bellagio is 4k/8k Mixed. A combination of Hold'em, Omaha, Razz, Stud. High Games and Hi/Lo. You name it, they play it. Each hand has a 100k Cap.

All of the guys who play that game are so bored that they make up weird Proposition bets on the side just to provide enough interest that they're willing to be there. The Prop bets are where all their real interest and action is. Even so, most nights the table is short-handed.

Negreanu's latest blog entry is all about a 2k/4k session against 3 other world class players that was a grind... because he was so bored he couldn't concentrate well enough to play his best game. So, he "only" won 25k. The only fun and interesting thing about that session to him was getting up and messing with one of the security guards for the table.

If you read between the lines you'll see that it now takes bigger and bigger risks to his own well being to even get his attention.

The most fun and excitement he seems to have anymore is playing video games at home.

I think the moral here... once again... is be careful what you wish for.

  2. This is an EXCELLANT post, IMO and brings up something Ive been wondering for a long time. When you have millions in a vault at the Ballagio, who cares about winning or losing a few 100k? There are two things to talk about here. First, remember this is their WHOLE poker bankroll (for cash games) for most of them. So they are playing by the 40xbb for ten sessions rule. 40BB of 4000/8000 is $320,000. They also need 10 sessions of that, so its 3.2 mil for the limit games they play. My question is, and I think this would keep the game interesting for EVERYONE....instead of playing 4k/8k limit, where everyone gets bored...why not lower the blinds a little...say 1k/2k and make all the games no limit? The thought of a million dollar swing oughta make EVERYONE pay attention. And the reason they dont? They dont want to TAKE those swings. If they complain about the game being boring, its their own damn faults. Someone once said "If the money doesnt matter, youre not playing poker". And thats exactly the problem. I think the "big game" is almost just fun for these guys, they dont expect to make any real long term money off of it, I think they count on tourneys and cash games with the fish for that. But if they complain tell them to make the games no limit...with no pussy $100,000 capped pots...play poker...REAL poker...at the stakes you can afford....otherwise quit bitchen!

  3. Thanks, Supe,

I don't think that's any kind of solution tho.

Typical buyin for that game is $500,000.00. If sitting down with a half million dollars of your own money in front of you can't hold your interest, stacking the chips even higher won't either. Besides, they need to keep the risk low enough that they catch an occasional fish.

One of the more interesting things about last night's Poker Superstars Invitational was a remark Todd Brunson made. He'd been in a cash game somewhere... at one point was down over 2 million... but had come back to win "5 or 6 million". That game was so routine that he couldn't even remember how much he'd won.

When you become that good, the game itself is no longer a challenge... at any level... for any stakes.

  4. Its not that the game is a challange, its that imagine you have $100,000,000. If you lost 2 million, over 4 hours, doing something you like, something you do everyday, when you won 6 million the night before, would you care? No, most people wouldnt. Now, imagine you have 25 million...and you lose 10 million in one night....now do you care? ABSOLUTLY. You just lost almost half your bankroll....now you start to really care about the game again, no?

  5. When I first started shooting up, just a little bit would do me. Now it seems like I'm shooting up more and more just to get the same feeling.
  6. I have a TON of respect for Negreanu. I really do. The man is the best in the world. A master at MTTs. Young. Feared.

Now i am also adding an arrogant braggart to this list.

I think it was Babe Ruth once said "It ain't bragging if it's true." Maybe it was Wee Willie Keeler or Muhammad Ali...I can't remember. Maybe...but humility and remembering that he was once a snotnosed kid that skipped class and went to a pool hall 24 x 7 and played hackysack during lunch while in high school and wasn't exactly popular with the ladies should humble him enough to know that high stakes poker doesn't make him classy....or worthy of the adulation his blog likely gets him. He also looked like a true geek when he tried smoking.

Some people "ahem" know him better than others. :)
  7. I only play large MTT's against quality players. I don't play $20 buy-ins or $50 buy-ins normally. I probably haven't played 100 hands of ring poker in the past year. Poker is only about competition for me because I am not playing for my food money.

Wachovia had a great blog about why do you play? Well, for me it's only about the competition and the feeling of beating 600 players. I can see where Negraneau and other big poker players would be bored because you are only dealing with 52 cards and the money is not that important. I think they all probably still enjoy the tourneys, though.

  8. As amazing a player as Negreanu is and believe me I know he could whup any of us, I have more respect for Harringtons two consecutive FTs at WSOP.

To me that was the most remarkable accomplishment I've ever seen.
  9. Well, the money can still get their attention though.

Negreanu ended up skipping the Bay 101 because the night before he'd dumped over a million in the cash game. That day he remained in San Diego and played for 31 hours straight in order to get even. Well, close at least. IIRC, he dumped 1.3 Mil and then won back 1.1 Mil of it.

  10. Dunce how do you know all of of this? Is this personal financial information in his blogs? I dont read them that often.

And no, this is not a great post as supermoves stated... this is a TERRIBLE POST. This does not really fit into the online poker scene that pocketfives.com caters to, and this does not really have the competitve feel to it we like to hear about ARUBA or other WPT events.

You make Daniel N. sound like retired computer millionare when in reality he's a middle class guy from Canada that lives in a medium sized home and does not have a huge bankroll. He claimed he was going to focus more on cash games last year, but then ended up winning 2 major titles for a million each that really helped him out in the pocket he stated many times.

I want to know... doesn't a big cash game before a tourney ruin their focus in that particular tourney especially when they stay up all night as Ivery does often or Daniel N.? Moneymaker wrote in his book that he made a routine before and after each day of the event so he could be sharp.
  11. First of all, Im assuming by "Ivery" you are referring to Phil IVEY, one of the best NHLE players around. Second, while youre correct about this thread not having to do a lot with online poker, I stand by my initial assertion that this is an excellant post. It is interesting (at least to me) to think about playing high stakes poker, where hundreds of thousands of dollars can be won or lost in a few hands. It is interesting (at least to me) to think about playing these stakes SO OFTEN that losing or winning that much in a single night can become "boring". I hope that someday I can get to that level and thusly any discussion ABOUT poker at that level, gives me insight. Just my thoughts..

  12. All info is from Negreanu's blog.

As to not having a huge bankroll. By his own estimation, losing a half million is "manageble", but losing over a million isn't.

Which is why he stayed in San Diego and worked very hard to get it back.

  13. And the beauty of it is, between what he won for 3rd in 2003 and 4th in 2004 he collected over twice what he got for 1st in 1995.

  14. I may be mistaken but high stakes nowadays would be like the 30K/60K game (I think it was no limit as well) at Bellagio where Todd Brunson walked out with $10 mil. 4000/8000 doesn't seem that big. There are many much bigger games. Daniel Negreanu is most known for tourney play.

Again I'm not totally concrete about the details but...
  15. Nah, the biggest regular game in rotation is 4K/8K limit mixed at the bellagio. You might be referring to a session in the SUPER game with Andy Beal, that's the only game around that I know of where those kind of stakes are played. BTW, the newest challenge is an 80M freezout where both sides will put up 40M. Andy Vs. the Coalition. Still in the works over specifics though. I know this in case anyone might ask bc there were open letters from Andy and Doyle about it. It's posted everywhere.
  16. It seems to me the answer is to stop playing the game for awhile. Surely there are other activities that people who've become too successful at poker can enjoy, and they'd easily be able to afford to take a year off to shake the boredom. Maybe a different kind of competition is needed, or maybe something that involves no competition at all. That's the answer to almost any kind of rut we can find ourselves in.
  17. According to the last I've seen, negotiations have broken off on this one.

They can't agree on who gets the broadcast distribution rights.
