yes your phone will work. yes you will still pay a ridic amount for voice charges.
What I do when traveling internationally is add "international data plan" to my phone (i have bberry) for the times I'm travelling. It's not very much $ and it allows you to use your phone as your normally would (apps/inet/etc). Just try not to make too many voice callz if you're not looking for a huge bill when you get home. -
nice subtle brag about going to Aruba and owning a cell phone

Depending upon where you're staying you can Rent cell phones in Aruba and its not too bad. I guess it doesn't matter where your staying, but the Radisson had representatives that were in the lobby and it was pretty easy.

now im starting to remember why i stopped using this site

I had a cell phone tossed in for free with my car rental. All I had to do was buy a pre-paid phone card at any gas station and they would load it up for me. I spent maybe $25 for the entire week and made a bunch of local and international calls. We rented our car at Aruba Royal.
Have fun!
