I guess I'm only writing this because I'm bored and need to take my mind off the freeroll I'm playing, but feel free to flame away.
The recent cheating scandal with the Gray brothers and the multiple high profile cases in the past always leads to "epic" threads on the Internet. However, like 85% of the posts seem to be random people complaining about some mundane, outrageous and wholly tangential aspect of the overall issue, which is the integrity of online poker and the punishment for the crime.
I didn't read every word of every thread, but I did see people want to eliminate money transfers, ban instant messaging during play and make the chat box a no spin zone. To me this is the beginning of an online poker police state if you will. These features and others like them are part of the many reasons that online poker is so much more fun, entertaining and interesting than live poker. Imagine if you had to play online poker, by yourself, with no communication to others until you logged off. I feel like it would be like playing live poker in spacesuits.
The majority of online players do play by the rules and these cases are so high profile because it pertains to High Stakes players, that for some reason are worshipped by the lower players and when a god falls in the forest it makes a shit ton of noise. People feel betrayed I guess, though I can't imagine them being asked for their adoration. There are so many other players that reach and enviable poker status through hardwork, dedication and the motivation to do the right thing.
I think it is pretty much conceded that there is no "1 player to a hand rule" in online poker as it is pretty unenforceable. That being the case, I would like to believe that the sites are working at securing the game of practices like multiaccounting, collusion and bots. I want online poker to stay as close to what it is as possible (or what it was before UIGEA) and eliminate all known cheaters, which I believe the poker community is doing an impressive job at. I hope that players can focus on this more than they focus on spewing hatred, wishing violence and in general being the gossipy bitchy middle school girls that many are when it comes to matters that don't concern them or they know nothing about. It will help to make online poker sites places everyone feels is a safe and enjoyable environment.
And honestly, if not, I'm probably still going to play. -
