I just came back from a poker trip to L.V in which I played at a game at a world famous destination casino composed mostly of regulars who knew each other well. As an outsider that already wasn't what I wanted to see at my table. In nearly every hand when these local players faced each other, they checked it down no matter the strength of their hands, sometimes showing each other their hands before all streets were complete, (after other players were out)
I expressed my displeasure for this vocally and eventually I ended up taking my money elsewhere to play in a more lucrative games.
So sure, these guys got to avoid big pots in which they would take money from their "friends" but their soft-play also helped to kill the game, in the sense that a new player who would bring some much-needed action to the game got turned off enough by it to seek a game elsewhere.
Don't get me wrong, everybody was beyond friendly, but for someone looking for a real poker game, it was a terrible table to be at.
