  1. I was about 2100 back in the 80's. I was never able to sit on my hands long enough to get much better. There are quite a few strong poker players that are/were strong at chess.

    Names that come to mind......

Dan H. is a solid chessmaster.

    Howard L is/was nearly a chessmaster.

    Sheets is/was ( I think ) a solid chessmaster.

Bob Ciaffone who wrote a few poker books is a solid chessmaster.

PokerPlayer and chess IM EKWity from party poker, was second in the party sunday tourney, very very early in his poker career. As I understand it, just learning the game from a coach, or trainer.

Chess GM W. Browne is ( I believe ) an accomplished poker player.

    Curtians, plays chess and poker.....

Several Local chessmasters that I know are solid winning poker players.

I really do not know the point of this post. (I am drunk)

Please represent ( or out, as the case may be ) Yourself or any other chess/poker players ( masters ) That you know ( know of )
  2. Curtains does not just play chess he is an international master (IM) named greg shahade. I play chess but am only a class A player around 1900 uscf. Have beaten quite a few masters and one grandmaster in a simul though which isn't bad for only playing for 3 years. There are alot of decent poker players that play on international chess club (ICC) as well. The player mastervlad on pokerstars is also a good chess player. Chess is a beautiful game - poker at its best is similar to a chess match IMO.

apestyles is an instructor at PocketFives Training . To get more of his advice and to watch his training videos, click here.

  3. Yes OBV curtains is good........ ( his sister is better :-) )

  5. Im a International master in chess and a lot of strong chess players shift to poker. Lately GM Wahls, Germany´s strongest chess player quit chess to mainly focus on poker.

Chess is simply too tough to make a livin on. You have to be top 20 in the world to make a good livin at chess.

    See you at the tables,

  6. You can look up players raitings here http://www.uschess.org

Many good backgammon players are good poker players, as well as Magic players.
  7. Thanks for responding...Mr. mystery euro IM.......I take it that you are a poker master as well???...are you making a living on poker???

    How does Mr. Wahl do???

I mean no offense....see you at the tables, as long as you play in the same trivial stakes games as me.......

  9. I'm also an IM... I know of numerous strong (IM/GM) European players who make a large proportion of their income from poker - I did it for a while myself when "between" jobs (I'm a programmer), but to be honest just got bored grinding out the STT's all day and not going out enough. The trouble is of course there is no money in chess for players at my level, but chess is really still a beautiful game - and poker just doesn't compare in that respect (but it's a great game too, for different reasons!).

Edited to add: There's an article by Jen Shahade (curtain's sister) in the latest New In Chess magazine re. chess players and poker.
  10. Yes, if I could only put in full time hours at Stt's......

A decent living for an uneducated fool such as myself.......

    Thanks for the response.....Others?????

Edit....yes OBV Curtains sis is awesome...again thanks far answer..........

edit edit......OBV question.......how to get past boredom playing online poker....OBV answer....Online Poker commune...........but this is another topic........

  12. Yes, solid, and grounded.........

2300 - 2500 chessplayers, as a whole, even given obviously it is a bigger pool, (than 2600+ grandmasters) are likely better equiped to make $ at poker.

Really, all it takes is to be satisfied, at what you are making.

Above poverty standards in any country, and in many places, a very nice living....

  13. Dan Harrington, Phil Laak, Chip Reese, Paul Magriel and Erik Seidel are great/good backgammon players. Mads Anderson was the 2002 world champion.
