Just been playing in a 18man $1.50 sng. Got down to 6players left (4pay) with around 3k chips pretty much tied for last. Ended up getting hurt badly with AK vs AQ and down to 1500. Managed to hold this until 3 players left. 1 has 12k other has about 10k. First thought was "im screwed" which i promptly typed into the chat panel. Figured I made $3 and that was likely to be it.
Blinds were at 150/300 and I managed to double up against the shorter of the two with AT vs 9T. Was sat with around 3500 still a huge shortstack but decided to try and learn a bit about them, I noticed the shorter of the two would fold when the pot was raised, but if someone limped he was pushing allin. I noticed the larger of the two would limp every single time I was BB and then bet only on the river.
So neither player was really playing there cards all that much mostly just routine. I had QQ utg and raised, the shorter of the two folded and so did the other. Oh well a few blinds, about 10hands later stacks about the same I got KK utg, this time I limped. The shorter of the 2 pushed allin, large stack folded I called. He turned over 8J and didn't manage to get lucky.
I decided to push my luck and bet 2 out of 3 of his BB's (on avg) but never with absolute trash, I made about 3k doing just this which put me just short of 10k. The larger stack was sticking to there routine and decided to limp onto a pot with my, I had 84 so just made a flat call preflop, flop came 84J they min-bet I flat called, turn was another 8 they min-bet I called, river came and was a T no possible flushed, they again min bet so i min-raised. They must have figured I had some type of a hand since usually if i missed I was folding long before so they pushed allin. I turn over my fullhouse they turn over 9Q for a straight and ship there stack my way.
Within 5 hands of this they were both gone. I took 1st for $9.60ish. Now the prize here isn't why I decided to create this post. It was just odd, a new strange game of poker like I'd never played before. I've always been a play the math type player and occasionally making gut calls but this time my cards were for the large part irrelevant. I went from being a huge shortstack to winning in about 20minutes because I was overly observant and monitored every play they made, I'd check the previous hand to see what hands they played when it didn't show.
The reason I decided to post this wasn't a brag, Im just curious how much weight others put into this type of information. I've heard alot about reading players online and never gave it much kudos, it was just a matter of "gut instinct" in my eyes or maybe an educated guess based on there play-style and past hands but not so much "reading" them, more likely knowing there style.
Please please share your thoughts and let me know what you've found cos i think this may have just opened a whole new aspect tomy online poker. -
i play 18 mans & micro stakes in many cases playing your cards is enough, while your opponents have little clue what they doing & why they are doing it. I try to get some reads early on,but it's not always possibe while multitabling.
