Story on right now saying a vote may come in early December on Frank's bill.
Both talking heads say it will pass. -
All they need to do is use the same strategy that got it passed and tack it onto a bill that they can't vote against.
-
Just got off the phone with John Pappas of the Poker Players Alliance who said that he expected HR 2267, which is the full licensing bill brought by Barney Frank, to be marked up in January. However, if Frank's Committee (Financial Services) finishes the financial reforms bills early that it's working on, then a vote could come down in December.

Dan, is this the bill that essentially gives every state the opportunity to allow us to play online and be taxed or simply ban their residents from playing at all? If this is the case, is there a list of some sort which could take a stab at which states would and would not allow their residents to play? Doubt it, but couldn't hurt to ask...
-
what exactly do u mean taxed? like when we cashout they take it out then and there at the bank? b.c dont we already pay taxes on winnings or at least suppose to ...would this make it automatic so theres no choice? or are we talking regular income tax plus a gambling tax? sorry im an idiot

I'm pretty sure it's a tax on the online poker rooms, e.g., FTP, stars, etc. Probably additional rules will apply to the online poker rooms requiring them to report winnings of online players in some fashion or another.

I may be wrong, but I believe they're referring to taxing the companies...

So even if the bill passes, the state where you reside can still disallow players to access the sites if they choose? Maybe I don't understand.
-
Well I'm better off as it is now...Indiana hates this kinda crap. I looked and we have 1 rep from 8 districts that support it. Is it likely Indiana will opt-out?
-
If this passes would it then be legal for off shore sites like pokerstars and FT to lobby in the US since they would pay taxes????
-
I dont know too much about it other than the basic premise that Frank would like to legalize some online gaming/gambling.
I'm concerned that if its legalized we might end up paying heftier taxes maybe double taxation in the forms of income tax and "gambling" taxes.
I like it just the way things are currently. -
meh, this is the wrong attitude to have imo. I like it the way it is too, but if we just do nothing, it will be illegal, banks will eventually give in and american players will no longer be playing online poker. Write Obama, your senators, governors, state senators. Some kind of regulation is better than the sites having to use shady processors, banks sending out weird "we are going to close your account" letters, and having checks bouncing or being returned because the processor is no longer being used.

Although I obviously want a bill passed which would allow us to continue playing, I am afraid that living in Connecticut, the two Indian casinos will stop it. It all comes down to who has the most influence, meaning money. With Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun in my state I am very leary.

FYP.

I would like to see it legitimized also, but I am afraid, like most things, when gov't gets involved, it isn't going to get better. -
Exactly. Washington state has tons of reservation casinos and lottery systems and guess what? They are HUGELY against online poker going as far as making depositing a felony.

Must be hard for Washington to enforce that.
-
I just moved out here and it's pretty much a huge joke... because his name's been all over the media, they could make a statement and go after Atimos, but it's basically a paper law with zero enforcement and people would actually flip if they started arresting people...
-
Get it passed on a national level, and then work on individual states imo.
-
Both IN and IL have strong stands against it. If this bill passes I'm 95% certain IL will opt out. I can't speak for IN but the way your law is it doesn't look good, as both of our states classify online gambling as a misdemenor. So it seems to me that this new gaming law would be in direct violation of current state law, so I'm betting IL would just opt out.

IL polititions love to feel like they are protecting us and undoubtedly they will all spout something about morality and ethics. Yet, they are so utterly corrupt to the core. Soon our last two govenors will be in jail and our current gov is a complete doofus.
Its so frustrating because I know that this is the best thing for the industry but if I want to keep playing online poker I'm going to have to relocate out of state wh ich I really can't do because of work and family situations.
IL blows. -
I think once the people who so staunchly oppose the bill realize just how much money it could mean for there state they will have no choice but go with it, do you want to be the representative that tells your voting public that their kids don't have text books because you didn't want to pass a law that you thought might be morally questionable?
there will be a select few extremist who do but voters will weed them out, nothing motivates the American people like money.
and fwiw for those who are thinking the sites don't want to pay the tax don't worry, they will more than make it back with the increased business and decreased lobbying expenses. -
My suspicion is that the states most likely to opt for it to be clearly illegal would be those with strong brick and mortar casino lobbies.
For them, its less about morality and more about getting rid of competition. -
This is very true as well. IL (and IN) have very strong brick and mortar casinos and they have a major influence on our corrupt polititions. Also IL state lottery is very strong here and we have a major NFL presence in the Bears.

So for all these reasons, I'm guessing IL insta opts out on this. Frank's bill, if passed, will likely spell the end of online poker in IL. -
I understand your view, but I still prefer the current status quo. My reason which doesnt apply to everyone else, is I havent been hassled by my bank over check/wire deposits. Its possibly inevitable. I have a small bank so maybe they just dont care.

Even if my bank does present me with obstacles, I'd think I'll be able to find a way around getting my winnings offline.
The bottom line to me is do I want to deal with some hassels or worry about paying a ridiculous amount in taxes which is guaranteed if/once this bill gets passed. In fact, its the ONLY reason that online poker will be legalized bc they know they can tax shit out of it. So I will no longer be supporting any pro online poker movements until I simply can no longer deposit my checks or play online anymore.
