I just don't get it. Why do people want to coach other people. Why would anyone want other people to know what they know, why make your competition better. If you are really that good why do you need money to coach people, I know poker has up and down swings and it may help limit the down swings but it just makes no sense to me.
The poker world is growing so fast, it is a time when people that understand what it takes to be a winning poker player take advantage of as much as they can, not by teaching but by winning. the biggest objection i have is the ghosting part, it is pretty obvious that these teachers do ghost in tournies and such, and it is not right. Also most of this ghosting is done late in tournies. IF YOU MADE IT TO THE FINAL TABLE WHY ALL OF A SUDDEN DO YOU NEED ADVICE????????
as an example:
you are a boxer, and you grew up with a guy in your neighborhood who is a boxer as well, and is also the champ, over the years you have watched this boxer, you also somehow came across some very usefull information..everytime the boxer takes 3 hits in a row on a certain part of his body he goes down..no one else has picked up on this. .... this boxer has a match coming up, would you sell this information to his opponent for say $10,000 when you could keep the information to yourself and get your title shot, take advantage of what you know and win a lot more than $10,000 for being the champ.
sure the example is not a very realistic one but kinda the same thing.
Itas getting out of hand people, anyone who has had any Fortune in poker is selling a book or giving lessons or something. I like gus hansen and think he is a pretty good player, but he has a book? you can't teach the instincts he has, not like you can teach people to play 10 4, 47 etc. anyway just my rant of the day,,, nothing against any of the coaches as i think they are mostly great players, but fk man keep it to yourself.

My guess is that it is lucrative and a constant source of income. Unlike Poker.

is there any variance in coaching? right then, i think I'll take the steady pay checks, tyvm.

If nobody wanted to help the game of poker grow and nobody wanted to help people I can guarentee you that there would be NO poker sites. No chat rooms and NO poker....Think about it....

The answer for me is that I am a businessman, that just happens to be ridiculous in poker. I also truly enjoy helping other people, and there is nothing right now that I could offer on a professional level other then poker expertise.
Also, I can almost be sure that every coach has noticed an improvement in their own game, as questions from students allow for more in-depth review of the game itself. -
I agree. I love helping friends out with their game because it makes me to think in depth about parts of my game that may have become second nature. Having to explain why I make certain plays to a less experienced player helps to keep all phases of my game sharp.

We don't need any more lawyers, either, and mf's keep teaching the sh*t, and mf's keep going to law school. Go figure.
