I want to know how you balance school, poker, and social life? I myself am deciding tos tart grinding on a small site as Ive been makin some profits there. And I am just wondering how I can balance my life in school and still show some nice volume while gettin enough study time as well
-
As someone who was in your position two years ago
make sure that you make school a higher priority than poker. I didn't and really regret it. Planning on going back in the fall. -
poker>school for me lol i no i no focus on school etc, its just fun for me
-
i'll find out as I'm currently putting myself through school/starting to get motivated to grind again.
but its prolly easier fo me cus i switched to business so doubt I'll have to study much.
go to all ur classes at the start to get off on the right foot and then figure out which days you can skip class/make friends in the easy classes and trade notes with them. -
I'm about to finish and I can't wait. I would say just stay focused on why you're spending thousands of dollars at school. Make up some sort of schedule so that you can have time for both if you aren't going to quit playing poker. I never schedule classes before 11, although I could go later. Sadly, my class schedules revolve around poker schedules, so just figure out what you want to do. I'd say though that I'd probably be finished with school a year ago had I never played cards. And I've never had a problem with a social life, I just don't register for anything after 6 on Thurs-Sat and obv play the Sundays.
EDIT: and whatever you do, don't skip classes. Just make your schedule so you can comfortably do both. For me it is having mid/late afternoon classes so I can still get sleep when I'm up late but I'm out of class in enough time to get the evening tourneys in. -
I have been grinding to pay rent and other expenses since my junior year (now a super senior) and it hasn't been too difficult to balance the three things u mentioned earlier. School comes first, and once your school work is out of the way you have to decide between friends and poker. On school nights I generally play cards for a few hours and then end up playing some video games with my roommates before bed. Friday and Saturday nights I obviously go out, and during the day on Saturday and Sunday I make sure to get in a good session. Balancing the three while staying in good physical shape is the tough part for me, and many others I'm sure. Just remember that you are in college to learn first, having a social life should be number two IMO.

the real challenge is balacing poker, putting urself through school by the poka scholarship, social life, and an absolute need to WORK OUT( just feel like a terd if i miss more than 2 days of physical activity)
i think the coolest thing ever would be the ability to never need sleep. Could accomplish lot mores -
I started playing very seriously my senior year of school (which I think is lucky). I think you are getting some unrealistic points of view here. There is a difference between grinding out a few SNGs and making a minimal profit and grinding real hard trying to become a somebody and actually make some money. What I'm saying is, what is more important to you? Personally, I partied my ass off in school from my freshman-junior year and went out a maximum of 2 nights on average my senior year. It requires sacrifice, something I was willing to do but to each his own. Actually, I was grinding probably 60 hours a week while trying to balance school. I'm not even sure how I managed it but I had a high GPA through my first 3 years so it was kind of a coast. Whatever you decide, its tough and you'll have to sacrifice something. GL

Welcome to flunk town....don't win anything significant or u'll skip class...grind .05/.10 while ur in school, stay away from long mtts. U'll be much happier.

College and poker: frustrating as hell.
I dont know what advice to give. In a perfect world, I'd say give everything you have to school and having fun poker will be there later. But I'm in the exact same position and I know that's a bullshit answer. In the end attempting to devote yourself to poker will take away from school and your social life. Do what you want to do, but be aware of that. -
dude you will have no problem unless you got to yale

I've been doing it with no problem, and I spend more time doing random shit than on school or poker. I've never spent much time on school, I go to class and study the night before any test and always pass everything. I'm lazy in general, so I also don't poker as much as I should, I could easily put in 20 more hours a week and it wouldn't affect school at all.

you have to come up w/ a schedule and stick w/ it.
for me MW im at school from 8-12. then go to the rec center for an hour to work out then go home. now i have btw 2-midnight to do any studies and grind out some pokers.
Tuesday i have class 8-9, 9-12 i go back to sleep, 12-330 class again, then rec center for an hour to work out. i have now btw 6pm -midnight to do homeworks and pokers.
thursday class 12-330. then rec center. no class on friday so i can play pokers as long as i want or get a decent session and go out to friends places at night.
friday no school so afternoon poker and night parties or bars.
no pokers on the saturday or sunday.
i was lucky to have a nice schedule this qtr. but some qtrs the classes end up being spread out through the day and those qtrs it can be tougher to find time. -
even tougher when you live in IC imo. cuz u know u gotta go out at least twice a week, and thats a minimum.

if you have a job during school how would you balance that w/ school and friends? really poker should be easier to fit into your schedule than a full or part time job cause you get to make up your own hours which gives you much more flexibililty.
-
i remember in high school a kid i know experimenting with this crazy sleep schedule where you take a twenty minute nap every four hours. after a while, your body gets used to this and you instantly go into REM sleep for those naps, meaning you wake up and feel (mentally) rested.

of course, it's not very good for your body, but you can get a lottt of things done. -
agree, which is why I've stayed with poker.

in poker, my only goal in it has been to pay for college/use it as a means to an end. Get the college/rent/books/booze payed for without having to slave it up in a part time job and maybe invest if i hit a lotto tourney.
what worries me is becoming mediocre in both and not maximizing what i can make with poker or the degree. -
god dammmmit i wish i didnt find/play so much poker from my sophmore year in highschool to my senior year then i could have the problem of balancing poker with college lol. I hated highschool anyway and im not sure if college is the place for me right now. Maybe community college in a year or two.......
-
Good advice poison I havent had a job since i've been in college because I never felt like slaving myself for 30 or 40 dollars a day, but I have looked into it and just couldn't put in that application lol, and like Duffy All I want to do is pay off my student loans and I cant hit the lotto on this site cuz the biggest tourney is only 750 lol

cash games and turbo SNGs FTW!
Seriously, last year here at UT-austin, playing 2/4 and $60 sngs 3 hrs a day every other day or so was the funnest shit ever. then a few majors on a hungover sunday or a tuesday with no homework. Ended up having enough time to make good grades and still grind out some beer/school money. Chopping the $55 70k GTD HU was nice too (brag).
BUT, stick to your studies FIRST, then worry about poker
TURBO SNGs and cash games are great way to crunch in 2 or 3 hours on random days to make a bit of money, then throw in the occasional mtt during the week
its still tough, but do-able -
1) during the week you shouldn't start playing poker until after you get of all your classes, because if you're down you will either go tilted and not learn or skip all together
2) dont play fri or sat evenings, go out and enjoy college while you can, its the best time to meet people and have a good time
3) this may be the biggest stretch of them all, but try to limit to mini sessions of 1 or 2 hours unless playing big tournies (which id save for strictly sundays if i were you) because in college someone always wants to do something and you dont want to not be able to go out and enjoy the experience.
hope this helps -
Depends on your personality imo. I have never been scholastically motivated and just cruise through school. I'm very competitive tho and once I started playing poker I couldn't put it behind college (as you need to if you want the combo to work i think) because I just wanted to get better at poker. That plus moderate success in poker and now I am pretty much incapable of motivating myself to register and attend classes. Gl to you sir.

Yeah it is tough to do the poker/school thing....but i was fortunate enough when i was in school to have a great school schedule...it was Tuesday from 8am-7pm (1 hour break at 1130am for lunch)...and Thursday from 8am-4pm and had Mon/Wed/Fri off....i was a brick and mortar grinder though as TS was 20 mins away from 'Cuse....i played 1-2 and 2-5NL and the nightly MTTs there....did very well and then quit school after 2 years of grinding, and started playing online and at Foxwoods on weekends when i moved home to Maine....then poker took a toll on me, my ex-gf at the time and hanging out with friends.....so i quit...now im trying to get back into to go back to school not work full-time and finish my degree 1 year and a half left....
