Congratulations Doc Sands on your #1 worldwide ranking! David was kind enough to give us his thoughts earlier today on becoming the world's #1 ranked online tournament player:
_____
PocketFives: Congratulations on your #1 worldwide ranking in online tournaments! What are your thoughts on being ranked #1?
Doc Sands: To be honest I am kind of amazed at how fast it happened. Less than a year ago I had a full time job and was just playing tourneys on Sundays. To be ranked at the top of a of list elite players less than a year later feels like the single biggest accomplishment of my life. It is rewarding to get this kind of tangible reward after years and hard work and dedication. On a personal level it also means a great deal to me simply because my decision to quit my job and play full time was frowned upon by almost every person in my family. I knew in my heart that I had the talent to be one of the best but having that goal become a reality really means a lot to me.
PocketFives: How does your poker game stack up against other elite players?
Doc Sands: I think my game combines the best features of other elite players I have learned from. In that respect I think it is very unique and adaptable to a multitude of situations. Some of the players I have learned from in no particular order are Titantom32, HemiPowerSWT, Gboro780, Purecash25, Jakoon, Gbecks, CrazyZachary, and Sowerss. I think I have incorporated components of each of these people games observing them over the years and as a result have been able to come up with a unique strategy that works very well for me.
PocketFives: What are your thoughts on the past year?
Doc Sands: 2009 was a phenomenal year. I worked hard to plug leaks in my game and especially to improve my deep stack play. This year I plan to continue to put in substantial online volume but also to get to more live events. Although my play from 50-100bb got much better during 2009, I feel my 100-400bb game, especially pre-antie still needs improvement. I plan to work with friends who play a lot of deepstacked live cash to improve this component. Once I can bring my 100-400bb play to the level of the rest of my game I think I will be will positioned to make an impact on the major live touneys as well.
I want to send out a special thank you to my girlfriend Erika. Before I was ranked and before anyone knew who I was, she supported me quitting my job to become a full time player. As absurd as it sounds in hindsight, without her I might still be suffering through the 9-5 work week and would certainly be a lot less happy.
