Just got out of a three year relationship with my girlfriend, and since I no longer have ties at home, and a lot of friends in Vegas...
I've been thinking about trying my life at being a pro before I start graduate school.
I get my bachelors at the end of this semester, and I've been thinking about just moving to Vegas and living on my own and playing poker. I turn 21 in December. I have a lot of friends here, so I think it might be a better environment because I'm kind of lonely back here in New York.
i have about 20k of savings that I could use to live and play poker. However, I do need my masters degree before I can teach anywhere (my undergrad degree is social sciences with a minor in special education... goal was to get certified in Elementary and Special Ed at the master's level).
Any thoughts, advice? I'm not sure what to do really... I just kind of want to get out of here and poker has been very good to me. -
Aslong as you plan on heading back to school at some point and getting your masters then I say go for it! You've definately got the talent, and now is the time to do it. Before marriage, kids or anything like that. I wish you the best of luck with whatever you choose and will definately keep railing!!!!
PS I hear Waco just bought a place and I'm sure he has an extra room to rent :P -
Plan everything out for this time (mid-December to August 2007)
$$$ and time -----> Goals
Your actual living expenses per month won't be all that high.
Your partying expenses in any city start to add up, however. -
GL no matter what you do Wein.

Why not get your Masters at UNLV part time? That's what I did many years ago because I wanted to play poker in Vegas for a while.
-
Maybe you could take online correspondance classes at your school and live in Vegas. I hope you do great if you do decide to go.
-
you could always to go vegas and attend unlv part time, and then when poker goes bad, whore yourself off to the tourists, food for thought, chew it up.
-
good luck wein, I know you are better at poker than you are at econ.

they dont have live micro tourneys in vegas...keep that in mind.

Good luck either way. I would suggest more than 20k though. Vegas is expensive gambling.
-
Bachelor's before you turn 21, impressive.
And we all know why you want to move to Vegas.....Taco Tuesday!!!!! -
Take that $20,000 and bet it ALL on the ATL Falcons on MNF. Its a lock.

Wein, little food for thought......I did this experiement this summer, spent aboug 11 weeks out there and did awesome. I ent out there with a similar bankroll that you have and I made good money. Except I developed a little bit of a gambling problem. All my winnings and alot of what i went there with ended up going to the casino via blackjack. Now I'm back home living with my parents like a douche bag because I gambled too much. It was a sad occasion that taught me a very vauluable lesson , "don't get wrapped up in the casino games, stick to poker." I learned my lesson that hard way, and I hope that you won't have to. Just control yourself and don't let that city consume you because it's able to for a lot of people. Good luck bud.

The appeal of the Vegas poker rooms?
I was born in Las Vegas in 1961. I spent thousands of hours in the local rooms before the poker boom. Over a 15 year period I made 3 attempts to play for a living. IMHO online poker is the nuts. I have not been to a local room since online games have been available. According to the people on this forum, apparently Vegas is a gold mine for the above average player. I cannot dispute that, as I've made no attempt to see for myself.
Perhaps the memories of sitting in ONE GAME and seeing 30 hands an hour night after night eventually wore down my discipline and I failed, three times. Blew large amounts of money, tilting after long boring losing sessions. The convenience and selection online is a dream come true. Of course, you can do both here. Come to Vegas because you want to come here and play live, not because you think it's poker heaven. Maybe I'm just old and wore out, but live play cannot compare to the selection and convenience of online poker.
These games will eventually become saturated with young online superstars, all waiting for the drunk tourist to HOPEFULLY donate. But, since they aren't playing for their rent, they don't always lose. You find yourself looking around the table at five other guys just like you.
Pass the money back and forth until it eventually makes its way into the drop. Not to mention you have to tip the dealers, and I never could be cheap.
Maybe I'm wrong, and right now is the time to take advantage of a lucrative market that will eventually disappear. It's not a new idea. Many many of the locals have attempted this over the years. 98% have failed. It takes much much more than a good game. A good game online takes down the cash and you can come and go when needed. Spend six months at the bellagio or the mirage every night and see what you think.
EDIT: My comments aren't directed toward WEIN specifically, just to the herd of young players headed this direction. -
Wein , my sister lives in Vegas and she occasionally subs at the schools out there. They have such a shortage of teachers out there that you can sub pretty much any day you want (something you might be interested in if your going into teaching)...
So heres what you do..
1) Sub in the morning
2) use teaching money to buyin to caesars 120 rebuy at 7pm
3) win $10,000
4) repeat
