A problem I keep running into latley is with continuation betting. After making a standard raise with one caller or so, I will fire out a coninuation bet on the flop. I hate checking here especially with a hand like AK or AQ on a ragged flop. I feel it shows to much weakness and I am basically giving control to whomever will bet first. I play my strong hands the same way so my opponents won't know whether I've flopped top set or simply making the bet with just two big cards. Recently in MTT's however I've been getting repopped on ragged flops when I'm just holding big cards. Basically what I'm asking is how often should I just be checking over flops I have open raised preflop (whether I flop a monster or rags)? Sorry about the long winded post and look forward to hearing what everyone has to say.

You need to learn how to read flop texture and also you need to know your opponents when you are continuation betting. I would suggest joining a training site, as I'm sure nearly every single one talks about this. Understaning flop texture is very important, and I have to say it's one of the best things I've learned from joining cardrunners.

yea brian is right..it will depend on the texture of the flop..and you dont even need to join a training site to learn this (not that I dont recommend it though)..read HOH 1 and 2
for a quick example..you raise on the cutoff with 66 and the the button and BB both call..flop comes TJQ all spades..its a horrible texture for your hand, and someone is boudn to have hit something..the continuation bet will not be profitable..you can check and give up on the hand most of the time -
obv theres a complicated game thoery related way of figuring out how often to continuation bet, but lately when ive been in one of those ak/aq+rag flop situations ive been using the hand number to determine whetehr or not to bet. If i remember correctly you should be between .5 an .666 continuation betting, so pick 5 or 6 numbers from 0-9 and if the hand number ends in one of those fire out a continuation bet. I dono if thatll help much, but its been workin kinda well for me

Agree with Brian. I had troubles with continuation bets as well until I joined cardrunners. They teach alot about flop texture and it greatly improved a pretty big leak in my game.

Flop texture certainly most important, but the continuation bet also depends greatly on the number of callers. If only One, then you must make the CB to maintain control of the hand and to show strength. The amount to bet will be determined by the texture and your read of the other player. Do you think they are usually calling your bet with rags? Probably not, usually 22-88 to flop set, suited/non-suited connectors, or Broadway cards in the playing range. We & They miss the flop 2 of 3 times, so if you show strength you are still putting them to the test. If Two callers, then decision certainly tougher, but more often than not you still take the pot down or at least gain needed information. Three or more, your initial raise was not enough, or someone has probably caught a piece of the flop and you can check/fold if needed. If you happen to raise with 88-TT (or connector type hand if you like to mix up your play somewhat) and connect, then the "wiseguy" who tries to make a play on you thinking you missed the flop will be berating you from the rail.
