IMO Coolers do exist, GB2005 just didnt' get coolered because WestMenloAA played the hand wrong.
What if you have strassa 2 seats away from you as the big stack and he's shoving every time it's folded to him and you pick up KK and he happens to have AA...that's a cooler.
I think of coolers like badbeats though, it's not that they don't exist, it's that the right move is going broke. -

You wont get any serious replies until you take that silly statement out -
LMAO at "Coolers do not exist".....
Because of "playing around each other", you guys didn't commit as many chips as you probably normally would. GB had a high M too, so it's not like you wouldn't have gone broke if you had less chips and he was betting. Good analysis, but don't say coolers don't exist. Situational setups and bad suckouts seem to go hand in hand all the time. What else would define "cooler"? -
How did he misplay the hand mantis? I thought it looked like he played it perfectly.....

My cooler hand from earlier today.

I guess I coudve played the hand like a sissy after his river bet,but no thanks. -
-
Thank you GBmantis,
that was exactly my point... -
STevester
beacuse if he put GB on JJ instead of a HUGE RANGE, then he would have gotten aggressive and GB woulda got all his chips in. It's fairly simple. -
IMO menlo played the hand perfect if he put GB on an unpaired hand, like KQ, A9, even a small pocket pair. he tried to slow play it a little bit and let GB catch something that he could get all in with. Had menlo known or believed GB to have a big pair, then he would have shoved. but that takes a very good read.

"People often say that there are certain situations where you simply are destined to lose or go broke." This is how GB2005 starts his article....Later on by the way he explains things I think what he is trying to say that the "cooler" is a very -EV way to evaluate your poker play....If you lock up everything under the idea of a "cooler" then you slow down your improvement in poker...If you claim something is a "cooler" than either you didn't arrive at the right analytical conclusion or your instincts failed you somehow ...Basically, thinking "cooler" makes your approach to the game kind of lazy...That's what I think he meant IMHO....
-
overpair to the bpard vs another overpair is not a cooler... having pocket fives and a flop of 5 2 2 and the other guy flopping quad deuces is a cooler
-
Suthereader- "Later on by the way he explains things I think what he is trying to say that the "cooler" is a very -EV way to evaluate your poker play...."
I think this is the message to take from reading this article. If you are hung up on whether or not a cooler exists, I think you are missing the point. No one really disputes whether or not "bad beats" exist, but good players take the term out of their vocabulary. Why? Becuase it's not a profitable way to think about the game, or the way any particluar hand played out.
I believe that is what GB2005 is saying here, and I appreciate the great article. -
i cannot say i agree. i dont go out of my way to make big laydowns. i play to make money. and imo if your folding alot of hands when you might be coolered your wrong
-
dude, he took like 80% of his chips on this hand... i guess if he pushes the river he gets 1.4 mill more, but at that point he was already in such a dominating position
-
meh but with that said, the river paired the top card. I might just fold there, since i dont beat alot of hands. I dont know why he couldnt have had A9 or one of many hands that beat him. i would almost certainly not bust on this hand, i might even fold the river
-
I basically agree here. This happened yesterday after the first break in the rebuy. This guy hadnt played many hands and I just knew he had AA and the guy next to watching knew it to and said I should just fold. Ive only folded cowboys one other time pre-flop and almost did it here but couldnt bring myself to do it. I hate going against my instincts. Im thinking that with how much M I had I should be able to lay this down here.

LIAR!!!!
A) you don't fold, you admit it proudly- you even wasted my time by posting a $4 pot where you called some guy with bottom pair
B) He check/raises A9, A9 is probably one of the least likely holdings for menloAA -
