Ok, so there is a rumor that Doyle Brunson got arrested. Did he? I don’t know. But lets assume for a minute that a) he got arrested and b) he got arrested for running a poker site that accepts US customers.
Would this be a good thing for online poker? Do you think Doyle might be the first person with any real muscle to stand up and fight in court? As I have said all along, I have NO IDEA why none of the poker sites that are making MILLIONS of dollars a day off of our play haven’t filed any legal proceedings. It truly baffles me. Maybe they are waiting to be bought out by Harrah’s for $5 billion, maybe they are just waiting to see if one of the other sites does it first, but either way SOMEONE has got to do SOMETHING. All this situation does is make me wish I had more money. Isnt there ANYONE with a spare $100k who likes online poker enough to pay a lawyer to take this thing to court? Since there clearly are enough people, but they have chosen not to do so, can anyone explain WHY no one has taken this to court yet? Every single time a poker case has gone to court, it has WON. Someone please explain the insanity? -
where did you hear this?
-
first of all it is a rumor. Second of all it could be unrelated to online gaming. Third of all, they would have to prove a tie that he OWNS it and doesn't promote it. I am not saying it didn't happen but so far there have been no arrests related to poker.
I don't think Doyle would even be the biggest target in this regard. -
There is nothing on any of the wires (AP/Reuters) about this. sooooooooooooooo=
gg thread -
Its a TOTAL rumor...and in fact, I think it may not be true because if it were I feel like we would have heard something by now...the only reason I think Doyle might be a target Beanie is that he lives in US vs. all the other major figureheads that live overseas.....
Also, I was under the impression that Doyle owns part of that company...if he is only a spokesperson, then I dont see much they could do. Either way, I still havent heard a good reason for why no one has sued over this yet! -
Supermoves, you make a great point about a site needed to step up. I am sure that there is atleast 1 awesome poker player who has a background in law, i.e. Mark Seif. If not, there are a ton of lawyers I'm sure who would love the recognition this would bring, and would do it "pro-bono". Bottom line is that a major player in the US poker field needs to step to the plate and fight this. When I say major player, I don't mean Phil Ivey, Phil Hellmuth Jr or a player in that terms, I mean a major player in the industry, i.e. a poker website like FTP or stars, a magazine like CardPlayer or Bluff. I know the PPA is doing what they can do, but they can't do it on there own. The are BILLIONS of dollars being brought in through this industry. I think it's safe to say that it's time some of that money gets thrown around. If it doesn't happen soon, it may be too late unfortunately.

The federal government will never directly attack online poker. Its has been proven by the Supreme Court that it is a skill based game. The only pick fights they can win and they can't win against online poke. It's why they attacked the financial institutions.

They have? I missed that ruling. Link please? -
To start with you had to keep from getting arrested by the police. Then, you had to keep from getting cheated in the games. You also had to worry about collecting the money if you won. Then finally, after all that was said and done - you had to keep from getting hijacked.
Doyle Brunson -
I forget the guys name. Some poker player filed suit against the IRS. Something about taxes. It went in fron of the Supreme Court and it was ruled by them to be skilled based. Ask some on the older poker players. They will know what I am talking about. Ill look on internet for it.
Okay i was wrong a bit, it never went to court here is the artice.

To try and answer the question being posed in the title of the thread, no I don't think Doyle Brunson could save online poker. In fact, no single person can save it. It would take the collective community of online poker players to stand up together to help save the game we all love.
That being said, if the ruling government in the States won't listen to millions, if not billions, of Americans who think that the war in Iraq is wrong, what chance does online poker have? -
Last I checked, the US population was only around 300 million. Therefore, it might be hard to rally billions of Americans against any cause.

Sorry, my bad.
