I recently changed my early tournement play after reading Roothlus' article. I found myself accumulating big stacks early and made 2 final tables in the next 3 mtt that I played. However, I found that I couldn't consistently continue with the same strategy as the tourny progressed. I found myself tightening back up as my stack got bigger because the better players would use my "big stack" as a potential source to double up and would consistently go all in if they played a hand with me. I would flip a coin if it only meant 10-15% of my stack, but as the field narrowed, It would mean 50-60%. How should my strategy change to continue to build and maintain my stack?

exactly
what are you doing differently since u read rooth's guide? -
I think once u get a stack the goal is to just maintain it, and not worry about building so much anymore.

I play more hands when the blinds are small. I'll loosen up and play alot more "small pots". Isn't that what they call "small balling"?
But, I didn't have as much luck with this technique as the field narrowed. My response was to tighten up as the blinds increased. Subsequently I found myself falling back in the field as we got closer to the final table. Maybe I need to gamble more to keep a big chip lead, rather than getting conservative. I'm just not used to showing down a medium pair or a draw and risking a big chunk of my stack late in a tourny. -
As the field narrows, you need to use your stack to put pressure on the rest of the table. You shouldn't have to show down that many hands to keep padding your stack.

I think that is the concept. You can stay loose, but use postion. Raise a lot of upopened pots. Use your stack to push people around...... with position. Be the aggressor in the pot. Dont give the small and medium stacks a chance to push, etc etc..

Yeah, I agree 100%. But, this was a change in strategy for me. When you play alot of pots early, the better players start pushing against you, or at least thats what I found. I should more correctly say the better players with average or small stacks did this to me. I guess that was a good counter to a small baller who is aggresive after the flop
I don't mind putting someone all in when I have a smaller stack isolated and I have a decent draw or big pair. I folded alot late in the tournements after the flop if people put themselves all in. When I would call, I found myself losing the race frequently. Basically I tightened up post flop. I guess maybe I continued to play too many pots after tightening up my post flop play.
