Curious to know what players feel is the most profitable way to play these tournies, as I wouldn't mind moving up in stakes with these formats. Obv it is player dependent as style of play is a big factor, but personally, I like to rebuy once immediately in the quads. I prefer to wait and see if I bust to rebuy in the cubed, and if not I rebuy just before add-on breaks, where I always add-on. I'm sure this is a repost but I see the regs always max buying when the tourney starts, but I hate not being there for the add-on period so prefer to keep a rebuy behind. Using this strategy I rarely miss the add-on. Let me know your thoughts/ strategies.
Mods poll?
A. Insta-max rebuy then add-on.
B. Save 1 rebuy as insurance until add-on period and get in rebuy just before add-on period then add-on.
C. Same as B but don't bother rebuying.
D. Pass on all rebuys/add-ons unless needed. -

I want to have max chips that way if I have the nuts, I can gain max value. Although there are occasions where it sucks (e.g., KK runs into AA), the large majority of the time all your chips end up in the middle you're ahead (otherwise you likely wouldn't stack off with 100+bbs). -

Max-buy.
As tyson said you want to be able to capitalize on your opponents mistakes for the full amount. One of the great things about the cubed and quad tournaments is that there are lots of tournament players who are not comfortable with deepstack play but still end up with very deep stacks; if you are comfortable with deepstack play and can find spots to take advantage of this situation then it is definitely +ev to have a bigger stack.
If you are moving up in stakes and feel that everyone is better than you, I suppose it wouldn't be bad to buyin for a shorter stack until you feel more confident. However, if you are posting on this forum and asking questions like this, chances are you are better than most of the clowns at the table anyways so I would just buy in max. -

if any sick setups occurs, you just writes "nh gg gl" in chatbox. -
Wow really? I must be doing it wrong. FWIW if I do see a clown with a big stack I will max up but otherwise I try to be there for the add-on period, but perhaps it's worth the risk of busting before add-on for building a huge stack.
@donut if I felt like everyone was better than me, or even close to half the field for that matter, I certainly wouldn't consider playing. I do see your points for max buying, but I think there is more of an argument for survival until the add-on as the edge gets lesser. Tx for reply -
I;ll address the cubed one, I play these in the micros, I always buy right away, while mostly everyone else do not, and play like a double
stack. When i have a monster hand JJ+ i;m only can lose half my stack or triple up. Also once everyone else at the tables loses their
initial buy-in they over play hands to try and double up., you really expoit this and build a nice stack, then add on later. -
Serious question -- what advantage do you think you gain by buying all the chips possible, but not doing so right away?
-
I think it allows you to rebuy if you get stacked. I do understand it is tougher to get stacked with 2 or even 3 starting stacks but you are able to play a little looser and try to build a stack without putting your tourney life on the line. I think there is a lot of value in being there for the add-on period, and insta max buying makes this slightly less likely.

I've always used A without even thinking about it... just makes the most sense.

Obviously depends on how many chips you get for the addon. If the buyin and rebuys are 1500 chips and the addon is 10k, then you better sure as fk make sure you get to the addon.

If, like on most sites nowadays, the addon is around 2k, then you lose a lot of value if you don't get it but it's not the end of the world.
Also, like most poker questions the answer is "it depends." It depends on your table draw, on how many other people are adding on, on how they are playing, etc.
In terms of chips per dollar, buyin + addon with no rebuys is the best, but obviously if you are playing in the tournament in the first place, you think you have a skill edge, and you generally want to have as many chips as possible to maximize that skill edge.
I basically auto addon to the max and auto rebuy to the max at every point of every rebuy, but that's because I am playing a zillion tables and don't have time to pay attention to nuances of my table draw and play. In a live tournament, I might be more flexible.
I played a 1k 1r1a recently where I think you got 7.5k chips for first two bullets and 10k or 12k for the addon. Since almost nobody at my table added the second bullet, there was no reason for me to spend another 1k to have the same effective stack and also to get a worse price for my chips per dollar. Also, the structure was pretty fast, so it was worthwhile to save a bullet to get to the addon.
About 20 minutes in, a really, really big fish directly to my right doubled up to 15k, and I immediately took my rebuy so that I could have the same effective stack as him so that I could gain more value from him making errors. -
Great thread... interesting the different opinions... I am admittedly not a top pro (or pro at all for that matter), but I understand and think the game well... so I hesitate to provide advice, but this is what I do... in the lower stacks I tend to want to buy-in for the max because overall the quality of play is poor and I want to be able to build a stack. With higher buyins ($20-$50R are my range) I try to pay more attention to what everyone else is doing, who i know, skill level etc...and I basically ALWAYS addon unless I'm at or near the CL with some distance to the rest of the field - this includes being any where in the top 10 assuming we still have a decent field left because an additional $2K just isn't going to make a difference in most tourneys - but like Turk said, when the addon is a stack then it is obvious that you have to take it. Anywhere outside of the top tier I think you have to ALWAYS take the addon.
