Hi...
I've been playing almost seven years now...never had a losing year (a miracle because I'm not a great cash game player, especially limit -- NL I'm decent).
I'm not a pro nor do I care to be one. I have plenty to do to make a living and I've always looked at poker as a nice, little, profitable hobby.
The first 3-4 years, I did quite well for this "hobby". Then, the UIGEA came and figuring it would be tougher to get $$ in and out, I wanted to preserve what I had. So, I started reading bankroll management articles. I did the prudent thing, dropped down in limits and MTT buy-ins, and tried to "manage my bankroll", as they say.
Well, since then I've still made a profit but a very small one, comparatively speaking. I've conditioned myself to stay in the low games and play the cheap tournaments ($5, $10, $20 mostly) even though I had some scores in the bigger ones. All in the name of bankroll management.
All this has done is made poker boring and no more fun for me. And, I actually think dropping down in limits has harmed my game because I do stupid stuff, knowing that it's "only" $25 instead of $100-$200 I used to play.
So, I'm either gonna quit or say screw it for the bankroll. I'm not a pro, so I can reload if needed.
THis is mostly a vent, so if you comment, great, and if not, that's fine too. Only one question: Do some of you non-pros go through the same rut or am I just missing somethng here?
Thanks,
Jason -
the players have gotten better and you're looking for an excuse to why you're not as good as you were

*edit* I looked at your scores and buyins because I have nothing else to do, why are you lieing about playing these $100-200 buy in tournies when I only see one over $50 on any site you've played on?! Please explain. -
Yeah I know the players have gotten better -- the $25 buy-in compared to $100-200 was for cash games, not tournaments. But for tournaments I've played the cheapo ones too, only because I didn't "physically" have the $$ on the sites.
It's funny...I can take $800 to a poker trip no problem...but when I see that I have $500-$700 online I have been playing the cheapo tournaments, all in the name of "bankroll management" -- and I've even cashed out for over $3K over the past 12 months.
So, maybe I should just take a shot at some bigger ones and if I lose, oh well....I'll still be even for 2010. -
Ah, there's an idea...I used to play those a lot and did pretty well...I should start doing those again...thanks!

I have the same thing going, I used to play higher than now, and its probably hurting my overall winnings. The games are definitely not as soft as they used to be, so its comfortable to play low stakes where there are the most fish. I keep telling myself I have to move higher and challenge myself, maybe you should too to keep improving your game, not just try to make money (like I seem to be doing)
-
Fuck it man, play higher! If this is supposed to be a hobby and you're not enjoying it, you're doing something wrong. Play at whatever level makes you happy and if you make money, great! If you don't, well at least you're having fun right?

This.
If it's a hobby treat it as such. And yes I have suffered similar in a way to what you post about. I am just thankful I have the euro sites to go to when confidence is low. To keep the interest I stay within brm but often have one stab a night. Problem then being is that I tend to play poker on this table and auto robot all others. On plus side I ftd the stab games twice in last few weeks. -
If you make enough money at your current job, then who cares about a $3 MTT that pays $800 to the winner... Those tournaments are so worthless when you play 5 hrs, cash and make a $10 profit. I'd much rather play a $50 tourney where you pretty much have the same chance of winning and it pays $10,000+ to the winner. Bank Roll Management is overrated if you make good money at your current job and don't care about reloading and taking "shots".

I see nothing wrong with the recreational player not following BR management. Not everyone has the patience to grind micros. If you want to jump right into 2/4 NL or $100 mtts go for it. Chances are you'll go broke much quicker but if you're doing this for fun and have the money to do so, who cares? It's good for the games and its more fun for you. Win win.

Id say use a daily stop loss and you will be fine

Wish I had some solid advice for you, but unfortunately I am in the group that "used" to win and now just get killed every time I sit in front of the computer. Variance is a mo-fo! Or maybe I just suck and am falling behind the bar, either way I no longer enjoy playing this game you call poker much either.

That's funny, I feel the same exact way. Idk why but about 4 years ago I use to grind the $50-$100 6 mans on ap and did very well. Then I stopped playing and started about a year ago on tilt and right after reading a bankroll article I buckled down and played w/in the set tournys. I continued to do well but never moved up. I think my problem is that I found superturbos and now any online tourny is boring to me.
I sit and look at my comp and then realize I would have to be here for 7-10 hours to play for change. I mean if I was playing for some good dough I'd b str8 but it seems like I lost my balls lol.
Idk. I have no prob playing 1-$250 buy in tournys a few times a month live but online I just puss out, even though historically I have done very well in the very few hsmtts I've played in online.
I think I just never really want to redeposit after my initial $30 deposit, so I haven't. My online roll is nice compared yo the 30 I started with but I guess I'm just a pussy when it comes to playing higher... -
I love poker. I deposit say $500 and play tournies from 11 r to 100 fo whichever I fancy. It's a hobby, I couldn't play $2 tournies, don't interest me. If I need to re-load fir my next session I do so
