Playing in last thursdays $330 venetian deep stack tournament i came across this hand I would like advice on, i believe the decision came down to whether i wanted to gamble and pick up enough chips to win or whether placing in the money was more important.... heres the hand in question. 50 Players left and 36 players get paid and the average stack is around 60'000 blinds are 2000-4000 antes of 500
Player 1 (80'000 chips) limps in middle position
SB (60'000 chips) calls
BB ME ( 85'000 chips) checks ( Qc 6c)
Pot: 15'000
Flop: 6s 4d 2s
SB checks, I bet out 12'000. Player 1 folds, and SB pushes all in for his remaining stack of around 54'000.
I instantly put him on a big draw and after talking to him im convinced he has a flush and a straight draw. If this is the case then theres 81'000 in the pot and it will cost me 42'000 for the call im getting 2/1 on my money, and the odds would have him around a 59% favourite if he also has an over to my pair if i have his hand right.
I have the pot odds, but do i want to be taking these gambles at this stage?? I can fold and still have above average stack or take this gamble, it was a tough decision for me and it came down to whether i wanted to just cash or go for the win, the player wasnt a chancer and played solid hands my image was TAG throughout the tournament.... -
I fold and wait for a better spot. Then again, I'm nitty. I wonder what he said that "convinced" you that he was on a draw? I usually don't trust what people say at the table.

You might not even have the best hand preflop. I have seen many people with 77-99's not raise pre flop. You have to let this one go. I like the bet on the flop and I probably would have bet a little less since there are so many draws and you're more than likely going to at least get a call out of this. Possible holdings are the nuts, a hand like k9s, a set but I don't believe so, or 2 pair. Easy laydown.

your right maybe the word convinced is too strong but in several other hands he had been animated in telling ppl what he had then showing them and also showing several hands when ppl folded, he seemed a very open player, coupled with the fact that this is exactly how most players would play a strong draw i went with that, i in fact folded and he did indeed show 3s 8s, however my read or call it what u will wasnt the issue, i would like input, to the question of does taking a race here so near to the bubble if the odds are correct to, and if you lose it will cripple you purely relate to whether your happy just cashing or if your all out for the win??
Is that the only question I should be thinking about here or should I be taking these races regardless? -
ty for the input this is also true and another deciding factor that of course I could be drawing to 5 outs thinking im on a race, alot of ppl at the table said it was a tight call even if i had read the hand right and the two bracelet winners at the table stated on pot odds it was a close fold, but would a player who wanted to accumulate chips to win have taken this or does it all depend on whether ur happy cashing?

I don't gamble that close to the money, especially with a hand like yours vs a board like that.
Bill Edler did an article for Full Tilt recently that talked about chip worth in a tournament, and how the chips you lose are worth more than the chips you win. It was a good article and it's fitting for this scenario. -
I don't think it's a question of being happy cashing vs. winning the tourney. This has more to do with your hand, the flop, and your opponent's action. Say you were already in the money. Would that make a difference in your decision? I would still fold in that situation because I think it's just too risky, but then again, as I've said before, I'm kinda nitty. While your read turned out to be correct, I still think it's too much of a gamble to call. Besides, he's got a ton of outs.
