  1. TYVM JayPaul, very smart idea with MySpace.

  2. Thanks JayPaul,

this is definitely going to take a broad effort to insure a defeat of the bill. The House majority loves to pass outrageous bills which have little hope of passing in the Senate because they can toot their own horns withough risking any real politicical fallout. The thing is, Senaotr Kyle is also pushing hard for similar legislation in the Senate, and we can NOT AFFORD to let the opponents of freedom of choice have a victory in the House because it would provide them a lot of momentum going forward.

Let's stop this thing now, before it gets any farther!

And to Scary, yes absolutely talk it up on the tables! Get people thinking about this now, let them know they can come here for more information and that the Mass Mailing day will be next Thursday!

  3. I was thinking about this a litttle today, and probably some of what I say, many of you will disagree with, but I hope at least you will read it, and then disagree, rather than condemn me out of hand.

Firstly, I recognize that poker is a very skillful game. Like Golf, or fishing, there is a very small element of luck. Ultimately the best players will win out, time and time again. As we see, they do.

It's unlike roulette, or blackjack, or craps, where ultimately, I think I can win or lose the same as Phil Ivey. There is strategy, but the odds are fixed, and you will lose in the long run I believe.

The problem with poker as I see it is two fold.

Firstly, not everybody who plays it is skillful. On honest reflection, I would say I am one of those players. I am better than I was, but I am probably still no better than average, and I would have no hope against any professional player, or anybody ranked. Which brings us to the point. For me to have any chance of winning even in the short term , I have to find a way to be lucky. And that means I have to gamble, because I don't have the skill necessary. If you put me in a hu game with Phil Ivey, he is gonna murder me. My only hope is to push all in every time, and hope that I beat him the first hand that he calls. (tell me how else a low skill player can beat a pro). For those of us that suck at this game to which we are addicted, we resort to gambling. For those of you who are pro's, we are the fish you so love, you win, you take our stacks, but we are gambling against you. We lose, and generally gamblers will lose in the long run.

I'm confident in saying that, 90% of the money wagered on Poker, ends up in the hands of 10% of the players. Congrats to you 10% who win, the rest of us are gamblers, and losers, whether we admit it or not.

My second point, is that the sites where we play online, do not exclusively offer poker. You see Blackjack and Partycasino linked to partypoker. I see blackjack on UltimateBet. I think we have done ourselves a disservice to allow the poker sites where we play to add on these gambling features. It only takes an anti gambling person to logon to these sites, and see games of skill, (Poker) offered together with games of chance (BJ, Roulette, Slots etc) to conclude that its all the same, because we let the two become contaminated.

We really need to persuade our Poker sites to seperate these and make them completely distinct and seperate, so nobody can use them against us.

Finally, as someone born in the UK who now lives in the US, I conclude as you all do, this isn't ultimately really about internet gambling. Its about politics, power, control and taxes.

Either the US should make gambling winnings tax free, as many other countries do, or they should legalize all forms of gambling, in all states, and enforce strict reporting and taxation on those who participate, and those who offer gambling services.

    My 2 pennies.
  4. Kyl and McCain have both heard from me multiple times. I liked Kyl so much that I played him in a mock-budget deal in a poli-sci class. He is aware he now has an enemy at the ASU newspaper, not that any of my fellow students vote.
  5. there was a very detailed analysis of the anti-gambling bill written up by some lawyer in last months Cardplayer Magazine.

Does anyone know if there is any way they can actually stop us from playing? Can they force the ISPs to block poker sites?
  6. Hope the ASU Paper keeps this on the front burner when school is back in session. I will check with some UA friends to see what they have been doing in the campus newspaper.

More and More the politicians seem to care less what the people want--How do you not realize the large numbers of people (especially the youth of today) that do not want the republicans to legislate their poker play on the internet.

I guess if these grassroots campaigns work with a lot of letter writing--they will realize.
  7. I live in California where card rooms are legal. When I sent a letter supporting on-line gambling to my Senators, I was very surprised to find that both Senators Boxer and Feinstein --both Democrats in a very liberal state that allows gaming--supported the bill. However, a newspaper article a few weeks later about the amount of campaign contributions that both Senators receive from Native American groups opened my eyes.

Don't think the supporters of the bill are only conservatives trying to dictate our morality. There is also a strong lobby by those who operate the "on-land" card rooms who see internet gambling as a competitive threat. The opposition is well-funded. We must really scream loudly to be heard. I'll be sending a second letter come June 15th!!
  8. I've also made a myspace bulletin about this issue, and I intend to make another just before next Thursday. I try to be sparing with the bulletins because people will start to tag you as a frequent poster and not pay attention to you anymore, but this is too big an issue to not take every possible angle to try and get involved.

  9. I want to know how they plan to enforce this law, but agree shouldnt BE A LAW in 1st place. its WORLDWIDE WEB eventhough a american(AL GORE) invented it.
  10. Have you seen how many Aussies play online poker

Online gambling is illegal in Australia

BUT Australia has no legal jurisdiction over Tax havens where UB is based
  11. They might not have to enforce it by arresting you.........if they sever the relationships between the Banks and ..say neteller..then it will make it very difficult to fund your account.
  12. Boxer used to be my favorite Senator.
