Ok.. so we organize small tournaments all the time and this question often comes up.. What to do with the button and the blinds when a player gets eliminated.. I know some times the small blind is skipped. Other times the button is considered a dead button. What are the rules??? For example:
3 handed play -- the player on the button is eliminated.. So now, what happens to button as we go into heads up?? In this case I assumed button does move to player who had been small blind prv hand.. BUT-- that would mean he would be small blind again (since in heads up button is always the small blind).. and other player would be again big blind.. doesnt make sense.. This is just one example.. But I'm sure there are basic rules for dealing with this.. also another example where the player eliminated was going to be button.. I guess in that case button is 'dead' and blinds are as usual.. ?? or is there only big blind no small blind!?????
Can anyone explain? -
The Big Blind always moves forward. You cannot be BB twice in a row.
If it is three handed, and the player on the button goes out, the BB moves to the player that was the SB and the guy who was BB last hand gets SB and the button.
At a full table, if the player in the SB goes out, then the BB moves forward and there is a dead button in that seat.
Here is were it seems to confuse people the most. If the player that was just the BB goes out then there would be a dead small blind next hand and the player that was in the SB is now the button. The next hand after that there is a dead button and should be normal SB and BB again.
I had issues with this too when I started hosting home games several years ago and did some research on the accurate rule. GL -
