  1. when in a hand and trying to determine a players range, are you trying to determine that specific persons' range, or the range of a player in that position (ex. utg, bb, etc)? does this question make sense the way I am asking it?
  2. You have to use both. To get the most accurate read on someone's range, you are trying to figure what types of hands that specific person plays from that specific position. If you watch how tight/lose they are, and have paid close attention to the hands they showed down, then it's much easier to put them on a more accurate range.

Sometimes you have to generalise, if you are new to a table or if the opponent is, then you have to put them on a generic range for the position they are in, based on your experience, the 'correct' way of playing, etc. But as you watch and learn more about what they play and how they play it, you constantly adjust their ranges for different positions. Every new piece of info you get makes the ranges you are assigning that bit more accurate.
  3. I am making a guess as to that particular player's range in that particular situation, yes. If I don't have any experience or knowledge of how they play, then I'm just making assumptions based on buy-in, live/online, etc. ("what would a button raiser be raising with at Level 3?")

But if I have any visibility as to someone being loose/tight/fat/skinny/etc., I'll use it. Why wouldn't you?
  4. Nice discussion of player's range in Bill Chen's The Mathematics of Poker, pp 59-69. GL at the tables.
