    Early in a small buy-in tourney, maybe first or second rotation. I know the limp utg was a poor play. That said, early in tournies that have small starting chip stack, 1k or less, I like to build a stack quickly to get rid of the feeling of "being behind" until I can get a playable hand. So when this hand came up I knew I was a little behind, but I was willing to take the chance. Does anyone else take this chance or was it just a terrible play.

    early in bodog tourneys, I usually sit and wait and wait some more, until i get a big hand and someone else gives me their chips. so i would fold KJ preflop.

    of course, since you've stated you play differently and try to get a stack early, I see no problem with your play. You flopped a decent hand and a big draw. If you don't fold, you don't have much choice other than moving in after his ridiculous overbet.

    a lot of p5ers have been playing on the smaller mtts on bodog lately, so feel free to stop by and say hey.

    esp because it is early in a small buyin tournament on bodog, id probably do the same thing every time.

    It wasn't so terrible. I didn't put it into a card calculator but I estimate you had about a 40% chance to win. Since your stated goal was to get a lot of chips early, this is a situation you want to be in. Just be aware that it will cause more early exits than double ups.

    This play is ok but not great. For one if you raise and get reraised and everyone folds, you have a tough decision. Second I think this is the kind of hand that plays well with multiple players, and heads up any ace has an advantage on you. The blinds are still so low that you can easily let go of the hand. Obviously the flop was good to you and you were lucky to have a maniac in front of you to bet 360.00 into a 40.00 pot w/ middle pair and it was an easy raise for you. Personally, I think if you are going to incorporate this strategy you should limp utg w/ a monster once in a while in hopes some1 will try and reraise you.

    His opponent was silly for overbetting but he had 2 pair on the flop not just a middle pair. His opponent got his chips in with the best hand and lost.

    ok after posting below i did it for you to double check: approx 51-49% in Abbe's favor....so actually this play is +EV in the long run and he will have slightly less early exits than double ups. but of course pushing small edges in tournies isnt necessarily the smartest thing to do in the world.
    still, i like this move a lot given that it is early, BODOG, and low buyin.

    Card calculator shows 51.87% in Abbe's favor.

    OK, so this was a good play, especially given that Abbe wanted to get a big stack early and didn't mind an early exit.

    o i thought that the board paired fives and he hadda pair of nines on the flop. I stand mistaken but it still was a rather large bet.
