2+2 thread about possible effects of law. interesting and scary
i hope the 2+2er is wrong. pretty scary imo -
Certainly presents a doomsday scenario, I just don't believe the government or the banks will be as diligent as he suggests. I sure hope not.
-
I honestly don't believe POKER will be illegal in years to come. I believe it will be deemed a game of skill.
That being said, I think it will be taxed in time. but honestly, I would not be against this at all. -
wake up people...........
u think the govt is going to pass a law with 1000000000 loopholes in it????
time to hit the bricks people and forget about the aspirations of being an online poker plyr. -
the one bad thing that online poker faced was that the govt was unwilling to differentiate it against online casinos and sports betting.
so they lumped it all into one...
sux -
If things start going as bad as this guy says, then there will be alot of lawsuits filed because of censorship. The government can only go so far with the enforcement of their laws. There are always loopholes and always lawyers who are willing to make a career statement by finding and challenging them.
As far as the banking side of it they are only going to do the bare min. to comply with the law. I'm in banking and trust me they do not want to spend any more money then they have to.
Just my two cents -
can't we just move on. Who cares what this douchebag thinks, just another long winded 2+2er. NEXT

Internet porn is still flourishing.......downloading of free music on the Internet is still flourishing.......all kinds of prescription drugs and alcohol can still be purchased on the Internet by anyone of any age........why does this 2+2 clown think the US government can do any better stopping internet gaming ?
This 2+2 clown is REALLY stretching things with his 'sky is falling' scenarios about Internet gaming.......
I could just as easily predict the Democrats will win the House and Senate and the also the Oval Office and REPEAL these silly and unconstitutional internet gaming laws.....just as Alcohol Prohibition laws were repealed 70 years ago, SO will Internet Gaming laws be repealed......
Why do my wild-ass predictions have any more or less veracity than this 2+2 clown ?
These kinds of long range wild-ass predictions only cause more useless hand-wringing. -
rank beanie?

I think I can make a much stronger argument that the Christian right nutobs got tired of seeing party poker ads on Oprah and did something about it. People were just tired of seeing gambling marketed to their children now that it won't be they are likely going to let adults be adults. At least that is my argument and I think it is plausible if not right on.
-
That makes alot of sense. I never looked at it that way.
-
Cmon people. It's useless to speculate on what might happen. All I know is that today I can still play and withdraw. And until they tell me I cant or make it to difficult for me, I'M NOT GOING TO WORRY ABOUT IT!!!
-
3 reasons not to worry:
1. The law does not make playing poker on the internet illegal
2. Neteller, among many other internet payment groups, are based overseas and can't be regulated by the U.S. government
3. Democrats are going to take over Congress in just a few weeks and once that happens, we won't have to worry about any more ridiculously prohibitionist laws being passed by an overly conservative Republican Congress -
yeah, that's what i wanna know...........just exactly WHEN are all the stupid party poker commercials gonna STOP
-
Interesting article with good points. I actually found one of the links more interesting; it was a discussion of the Skill vs Luck argument which will be the foundation of any efforts to either legislate a carve-out or litigate against the law.

Oddly, even though this article is significantly negative, I think there is secret weapon and he posts here frequently. N82 has compiled the most comprehensive data set around in thepokerdb to show with no uncertainty how some players clearly and consistently demonstrate the ability to beat the statistical mean. The article references a Card Player quote about how a great player would take 5 lifetimes to guarantee a WSOP ME win which is using a dataset that is not helpful.
Having thousands of tournaments will clearly show over a relevant set the skill involved. In addition, there was a service called PokerEdge which extensively datamined cash games and will show the same proof.
Maybe thats why Nat is attending law school; so he has the skillz necessary to save poker...
