Just wondering, considering Bax was #1 for a very long time, and considering that he quite literally taught a very high # of fans on this site how to play tournament NLHE, and considering he's a bracelet winner last year legendary for winning a stud tournament the first time he played one, and considering he finished top 30 in the CardPlayer POY race this year which is probably the best accomplishment by any active P5er in 2005 including any # of 100 rebuys won in any # of days, and considering he comes across as being a really nice and genuine and thoughtful guy when he doesn't probably have to be as nice or genuine or thoughtful as he does to the random people who want something from him he encounters as a semi-celebrity, and considering that when he does play online he pretty much flat owns....I'm thinking this fan poll tells us more about the fickle nature of the voters than who has the most support from this community. I don't mean any disrespect to the people ranked above Bax in the fan poll, they're all great players, and I'm not trying to show a bunch of man-love for Bax, but Jesus are our attention spans thisshort? A few months ago we screamed for Ari to go #1, people said no, Bax should keep the crown. Others called for Rizen to be #1. Now we vote Ari 56, don't put Bax in the top 10 and Rizen ranks between the two. Here's an idea, next time the balloting is run, don't give people the option to sort by PLB. Make them type the names in. That or list them alphabetically only. Voting is rigged by including the PLB, and the voters were lazy by essentially sorting the players by PLB and maybe adding one or two favorites in there.

i gotta say i agree. i was sincerely shocked when i saw that not only was ari out of the top ten, but out of the top 50! my guess is people didnt rank 100 but only ranked the top ten or so, after then its sorted by plb which rigs it a bit. i would motion to only include those ballots in which more 75 players are ranked, preferably 100 though.
-
with that change, and increasing the sliding plb to 6 months, i think the rankings will be MUCH MUCH closer to perfect
-
That's ludicrous, asking a fan to rank 75-100 players for their fan poll is like asking you to enter your top 26 picks for starting first baseman for the NL in the All-Star Game--since there aren't that many teams in the NL, you start writing in the backups. Let people pick 10. That's it. You take points fromt those 10. That's it. The PLB is in no way whatsoever allowed to skew the fan poll rankings. Based on the people who the fans put in their top 10, you have the people who garner the most support of the fans, and a true indication of what a fan poll should be. That's it.

i ranked top 75 just like 5's and bax,ari and rizen are all in my top 20

this run on sentence has my 1st grade teacher mrs orsino is rolling in her grave!! -
The fan poll is just for fun, Benny. While I somewhat agree with your sentiment, this just isn't really something that's worth getting upset about. For what it's worth, Bax, Rizen, and Ari are ALL in the top 10 of my fan poll :).
The fan poll isn't rigged. It's just a poll taken by thousands of people, many of whom aren't particularly well informed about what they're doing. We're strongly considering only letting everyone vote on 10 or 20 people next time around, since it's a huge task to rank more than that and generally becomes tedious. I'm laughing now at all the posts back in the day criticizing us for someone being ranked 43 when they should be in the top 35, etc. It's an extremely tedious, difficult process to subjectively rank that many players.
I will say that when I went and voted yesterday in the ESPN power rankings poll, I ranked the Titans number 1. Do I objectively think they're the best team in the NFL? No....maybe top 10, no way they're the best. But they're my favorite team, so I ranked them number 1. That's what fan polls are---pollers aren't required to use strict criteria and be focused on legitimacy. It's just something that's for fun that anyone, regardless of experience, can participate in, and it should be viewed as that and only that. -
I think his favorite word is 'considering'.

Adam, not upset, just find it redundant and am disappointed more in the membership than you guys. Say a newcomer makes her/his first trip to P5s today (for shame!) because (s)he read in Bluff that we're the #1 discussion group on the net. (Also Lycos says that 'poker' was the #1 online search term in 06, so I'm sure there are a lot of new hits daily.) Say that newcomer looks at the rankings, the PLB, the fan poll. Based on seeing the same people on top of all three, that noob would probably (wrongfully) assume that the same players are A) the best, and B) the best liked by the most passionate community in the hottest topic online. However, if you allowed members to vote who have A) been here 6 months +, B) FT-ed at least one MTT that counts on the rankings, C) have posted say 50+ times in Poker Discussion and/or Hand Advice, and required those members to A) Vote for only 10, and B) Come up with those 10 on their own without guidance from PLB scores, then I yield to no one in my belief that Bax would be #1, Ari would be top 10, Rizen would be top 10, and we might even see a Mahatma, a GP, an Ozzy or an Antonius in there, because the 7 names I've listed, plus Below, Tmay and Annette, are probably the most respected, most feared, most holy-shit-I-do-not-want-them-at-my-table players online. Which would be a true reflection of the taste of these forums and the people who make it great.

"his run on sentence has my 1st grade teacher mrs orsino is rolling in her grave!! "
This is not exactly proper grammar. -
Good thing she only teaches 1st grade, since some of the best examples of English Lit--Ulysses, Gravity's Rainbow, Infinite Jest--contain sentences that make mine look pretty darn terse by comparison.
