  1. On 5/20, straight out of college, Matt "gotzballz" Stroud announces he is turning pro.
First two days, he cashes 11 times, final tables three times and takes down two MTTs. Total looks to be in excess of $4500.
I wonder how his classmates are doing financially?? Probably still hungover from the graduation parties.

Didnt he pay like 60% taxes of his win?
  13. In 1980 Ungar entered the World Series of Poker (WSOP) looking for more high-stakes action. In an interview for the 1997 Main Event Final Table, Stu told ESPN TV commentator Gabe Kaplan that the 1980 WSOP was the first time he had ever played Texas Hold'em.
  14. While Peter Eastgate won the 2008 WSOP Main Event in November, scoring a whopping $9.1 million win, he might as well have come in last. The tax laws in Denmark require that on the first $4 million of a gambling win, 45% must go to Danish income taxes. And any additional winnings on top of that ($5.1 million in Eastgate’s case) are taxed at the rate of 75%.

The main reason that Danish taxes are so high is because of the socialistic government of Denmark’s citizens live under. They receive completely free health care and college tuition scholarships that pay every cent of their education, but all of this comes with a big price tag when it comes to taxes. The funding for these benefits comes straight from high and repressive taxes. In Eastgate’s case, his $9.1 million win, after taxes, will come out to less than $2.5 million.

wow this is unreal, also was unaware UK took 40%. i thought winnings here were tax free (online anyway) anyone know more about this?

10% flat tax if you are Russian. Good for poker players I guess.... but it's definately a tax that favors the rich.
  16. i thought i heard/read somewhere he moved from denmark b4 the series for that reason and got to keep it all/most of it...

I did too. I'm pretty certain actually that he was going to be taxed either by Denmark or the UK depending on something.... can't quite remember but it was in cardplayer this past January I think.
  18. That Russian who FT both WSOP main events

40% sounds like the high band income tax rate. However, all gambling winnings are tax free in the UK.

I also read in PokerPlayer magazine, that even if you won the main event in the WSOP, as long as you have your passport, all you have to do is sign some document and its all yours.

  20. lol @ $4500 being the fastest ever start by a pro

  21. pretty sure i heard that before the november 9 he became a citizen of the u.k. to prevent this

i know i mean congrats to the man but theres like atleast 30 daily tournies with first higher then 4500 that r win by randoms daily

  23. It's well known that Eastgate moved to UK before the ME FT and didn't have to pay any taxes on winnings.

And, thought its not tons of cash, I'm sure Gotzballz is loving his career decision.
  24. I mean congrats..etc...but LOL. "In excess of 4.5K"? I mean like...thats cool and stuff but you're not counting buyins etc etc and thats not even mentioning that its not even close to the best start lol. Low-volume players don't understand that when you see someone win like 30 or 40k you automatically think they are rich when really its dependent on a bazillion factors (are they backed? were they in makeup? if they arent backed, did they have a bad downswing recently?)

  26. 4500 seriously thats like living expenses for two months if your fairly frugal.

gonna be tough to make a great living if this is a huge run (unless he is sit and go grinder)

but playing pro aint easy if you gotta pay your living expenses off your winnings.
  27. I seem to remember a post the other day of a hand where he made quads or something. I also remember thinking "wow he played that like crap" while simutaneously thinking within a milisecond "well hes gone pro and seems to have alot of support and backers so i must be wrong that he played this hand so rediculously bad" then i remember looking back at the hand and again thinking "wtf is going on here, this is retarded. Im sure there are a lot of nitty bankroll players who cash out too often than are better than some players who are "pros" who are banking. just saying. im drunk and mean no disrespect. and at the same time i dont give a shit. either way i like to see my fellow people excel at this game. And this fellow seems to be doing that. so. glglglgl
