its pretty standard but the amount of his raise looked so suspicious. i dont know if any thinking player plays a flopped set that hard on a board that really isnt too scary, but he could def have a 4 in his hand since he was priced in from sb. i didnt three bet my jj pre since i didnt rly see any reason to build a with that hand this early it def would have gone call call call...terrible flop. that being said if im thinking along those lines i know i have to be prepared to make folds like this when im not sure im good. lemme know what you think.
  2. I kind of understand your 3bet reasoning, and I kind of don't.

I totally get that you envisioned a scenario where your 3bet just sweetens the pot, everyone calls, and you're now pretty committed to a pot really early on. That could definitely happen. But at the same time, flatting pre-flop almost GUARANTEES that everyone is just going to limp along and extra limpers are the absolute worst thing for your Johnny's.

The monstro-raise is pretty suspect. If he does have a 4, he's losing a huge opportunity to get you to stick in more money when you're way behind. Still, I think he has the 4, a weak one probably, and now he's gotten excited and blown his wad on the flop. There's no way he check-raises into 4 players without the 4. So I do think you made a correct fold.

I think you should have a re-raised pre to define your hand a little more, yeah, it's early, but you've got to make money with good hands when you get them.
  3. Please please please 3 bet preflop so you're not in gross spots where you have no clue where you are. As played I have no clue what I do here. A part of me wants to peel the turn or jam as I can't fathom how he plays a monster this bad, but I can understand a fold.
  4. I play this hand the exact same way at this stage of the tournament.

Control the pot size, protect your stack with a vulnerable holding facing a raise and a call.

I definately think the SB has the 4 but i don't see extra value in him just smooth calling. Unless you really think the other players are going to contribute chips on this flop?
  5. Appreciate all your posts.. 3betting def seems like itd be correct here but ive grinded microstakes enough to know that most players will call with any two if theyve invested a chip in the pot so i guess thats mainly where im stuck and i dont think its a problem that has a simple solution. if the level of play was a little better than that of a sunday $6 mtt, i think it goes without saying that threebetting pre would be the best option.

  6. What's the buy in here? If this is a $10 and under tournament, then no way am I folding. It could be something huge, but the way you played it, it would look like A2 to me. So, he could have QQ, but he could have AK, 1010, 77 just as likely.

As I say, only holds for the buy ins I listed, but in these, it's critical that you 3bet preflop, to keep you out of this. As played, you look really weak to a decent player (and a bad player will raise tons of hands that your crushing).
  7. This is a great post. I'd probably play it the same as you did. In early stages I like to play JJ much like TT or 88 or whatever, and basically hope for a set. I agree that a reraise at this stage will only bring along stragglers, it won't get rid of any overcards, although it probably would have killed SB in this case but I think that's too results-oriented to consider.

I'd bet on the flop in the same spot and probably fold to the checkraise if I didn't have any indication that the villain was playing like a nut. However if I'd seen him act really aggressive for the last few hands (and since he has 3000 chips, I wonder if he had) I'd probably have to call. You can run into these people who still play like it's 2006 and don't mind checkraise bluffing allin on the third hand.

Appreciate hearing everyone else's thoughts especially, since this is a nasty situation that comes up often enough.
  8. Yeah, i agree with the way he played this hand early in the tourney, why get too involved with JJ when we prolly still have an edge against this field early in a mtt? Good fold, nh

  9. i really dont like this.

your hand is VERY underrepresented here and villain can show up with 55-TT a lot

i ship it in here and get an easy double up.

    also, dont show

  10. fold + show = reasonably tight table image = when we get a little deeper i can get away with playing like a maniac

  11. yea, but if i saw this hand id reraise you every single flop and youd become exploitable, basically forcing you to have a hand to play against me

its almost never a good idea to give away free info

  12. and after showing that id come over the top and your folding.. i see where youre coming from so many ppl are so against showing but if i feel like i can use it to my advantage later then im showing.

  14. that check raise really looks suspicious! i think he really has the 4, maybe he can be holding A4s K4s.. or sommething like that.. nice fold. pd: nice scores! i hope one day i can get them!
