Inspired by Lee Jones' recent article in Cardplayer on his SAGE (tm) Sit and Go Endgame system, I decided to try and develop a formula and system for limit Holdem preflop play. Having worked this up and after tweaking it for several weeks, I am now ready to put the word out. It is a free PDF download at www.pokerhomey.com.
At first glance Preflop50 looks like just another hand selection chart, but it is quite different actually, in that you don't have to memorize anything really (just some basic betting rules based on position/action as found at the bottom of the chart). Instead of memorizing various hands that are good for different positions/levels of action/type of table, etc....you just calculate your hand strength using the formula I developed, and raise, fold or (in rare cases) call depending on your hand strength number vs some predetermined (but convertible) breakpoints. Shifting the breakpoints also easily allows you to adapt the system for extra tight or loose tables. It is all explained in the Instructions which follow the chart.
So the real difference with this system is that because of the Preflop50 formula, you can actually use this system in the heat of the game without having to rack your brain trying to remember what Sklansky or whoever said to do in this position with this action at this type of table. Maybe that comes easy to alot of you, but the charts just kind of run together for me usually. With Preflop50, however, I just add a few numbers together and I know what to do for each position/level of action/type of table. It works and it's very simple.
I have had a few pros/instructors look it over and it has been deemed sound strategy, although I will say right up front the Preflop50 system is NOT designed for the expert limit player. In other words, some of you will disagree with some aspects of the system as it compares to your gameplay. But, for many limit players (i.e. all the bad or mediocre players) the system should be a big help.
I was a much better NL tourney player than limit ring game player (not that unusual), and now I am doing very well in limit ring games by strictly using Preflop50. I have been the guinea pig, and by using my new system and playing very aggressively postflop, I can happily say it has significantly increased the consistency and amount of my limit game wins (10 to 20 bb/hour alot of the time against typical fishy online tables).
Preflop50 is available as a free PDF download at www.Pokerhomey.com. I am using this project and giveaway as a means of gaining readers and subscribers to Pokerhomey.com. Your feedback is welcome, love it or hate it. If you like it, point folks to Pokerhomey.com. Just don't use Preflop50 it against me at the table. Hope it is helpful to you or somebody you know.
