  1. It's Friday, and I'm lazy. I'm going to throw in my 2 cents worth on as many topics going on as possible right here, right now without having to create 10 different replies.

People call themselves "online pros" only because they don't have a job, not because they are successful. Scraping out $1,000 per month to pay mom rent for the couch six months out of the year doesn't really count.

People lie about their total take - accentuating the good, discounting the bad. When someone asks you how much you won playing poker last year, do you just tell them how much you "won", or how much you "netted". $32,000 certainly sounds better than $(6,000).

I think cash game players tend to be better than Tournament players.

You are also talking about online cash games, where there are people reducing your skill edge through various means at least to some degree.

I personally could not make a living playing cash games - I suck. My style works better in tournaments, or I just haven't learned the adjustments to make for cash.

I would think a good cash player would definitely make a better living than a tournament player, but a good tournament player is going to be more famous, going to get more chicks, and is going to have a better time.

In cash, if you make better decisions than your opponent 90% of the time, you wil be very profitable. In a tourney, if you make better decisions 90% of the time, it all depends on when the 10% happened. Early = no problem, late = hasta la bye bye.

Poker is a zero sum game. For every player that wins $100,000 for the year, there has to be 100 players that lose $1,100 per year (at a 10% rake).

    Poker Salary is an oxymoron.

I couldn't make a living cleaning windows for Poker stars' corporate offices. As I'm in my scaffold cleaning the top floor's exterior windows, a hummingbird would come along and land on the rail beside me exceeding the weight capacity of the steel cables instantly snapping them and plummeting me to my last and final bad beat.

"Old School" is still the nuts, day in and day out. You'll always know how to get the rent money.

"New School" can put up amazing results on a hot streak. Can "New School" budget their $400,000 in winning this year to pay the bills next year when they lose $50,000? Overall they'll make $175,000 per year, let's just hope they haven't blown it on hot chicks and being famous. Anyone seen Gus Hansen, lately?

Personally, I'm enrolled in the "special ed" classes of both schools. I'm trying to find my way, but I've definitely noticed myself utilizing both styles more based on tournament dynamics. Most great players fall somewhere in the middle, I would think.

Players that have jobs have a huge advantage. Don't bluff me, I've already made more money this year than I will spend. Poker money is all about the fun - trips and material things.

My kids are the coolest in my neighborhood because every big win I have, I usually buy them something cool. Picture a six year-old girl riding her electric scooter jamming to her MP3 player just killing time till it's time to head to the airport for her next trip to Atlantis. Yeah, we roll like that.

Anytime a player gives up a job to go pro, you can expect a downturn as they play with a tight sphincter. Asssphincter says what??

I've always thought that cash game players goal of winning 1-2 BB's per hour was too low. I figure if I lose 6-8 per hour, why can't someone else be winning 6-8.

I think a tournament player should strive to be twice as good as average and that'll lead to consistent results. Basic goals should be 65% average placement and 20% ITM.

After that, it's time to go for the W's. Get in position, then play like you got 12 pound balls. Your FT % will drop, but your top 3's will go up. That's where the profit is.

I get really perturbed when a player makes a significant rise up the rankings without ever WINNING a tournament. Forget about FT's, everyone else does.

I get really perturbed when a player makes a significant rise up the rankings by winning 5 of his 600 tournaments for the month.

I get really perturbed when a player makes a significant rise up the rankings by winning 60-100 player events and $10 rebuys that they spend $200 on.

I get really perturbed when any player not named Aawwnutz makes a significant rise up the rankings.

I get really perturbed when anyone criticizes the PocketFive's guys for their rankings choices. My list would be different, your list would be different, we're all here for their list.

Props to the P5's guys for the great WSOP freeroll. I hope all of you guys that threatened to leave the site have left it so the rest of us have a better shot. This is a FREE site delivering great value. I'm impressed.

I think I play better in person than I do online. All my buddies think the opposite.

I will win a Sunday major and a live poker event in 2006.

Anyone notice that Poker HO and NSXT2 have tightened their game up? A tight sports car sounds good, but a tight HO? hmmmmmmmm... another oxymoron.

oxymoron is my word of the day - I gotta use it one more time.

ActionJeff - now that's an oxymoron. He doesn't give you any action. He gives you an ass-whoopin.

Next week's word of the day = whoopin.

Sorry for all of the info that you didn't ask for, but it's Friday AM and I'm bored. I'm already thinking about the PokerRoom Grand, the Sunday tourneys, and Paradise Conquest. And how to get to Caesar's WSOP, and which preliminary WSOP events to play in. And, will brsavage be at the New Orleans WSOP and how can I free up my schedule for that one. And, wouldn't it be fun to go to the WPT Paris. Oh yeah, and about sex.

    GL....

  2. Make this a regular feature.
    That is all.

    Kintanon
  3. Old School.... definately old school....
  4. I like this post.

"Anyone notice that Poker HO and NSXT2 have tightened their game up?"

Isn't that weird? You've probably been watching them on party though.....I think h0 is still h0 when he plays on UB and stars.

  5. entertaining read...get bored on every Friday morning...

My kids are the coolest in my neighborhood because every big win I have, I usually buy them something cool. Picture a six year-old girl riding her electric scooter jamming to her MP3 player just killing time till it's time to head to the airport for her next trip to Atlantis. Yeah, we roll like that.

This is my favorite part... I dont have kids, but when I do, I strive for them to be cool
  6. Nice post Nutz. Got a lot of chuckles reading it. Most of it is dead on. One correction though - Poker is not a zero sum game, but a negative sum game because of the house take. Keep posts like this coming.

    Lou
  7. good stuff aawnutz...i particularly like the shout out to my wisco boy HO, in the couple sightings ive had ive noticed he got some glasses, cuz 25os doesnt look like AA to him anymore ;)

  8. Rant on, buddy.

I, too, will look forward to this on Fri AM.
  9. I think cash game players tend to be better than Tournament players.

    TRUE
  10. Good Read!
  11. Very Nice and Funny and to the point.
  12. Great post Nutz. I recommend that you do this weekly in a blog or something. And as you said about H0 tightening up, i have to agree with whoever said that it was on party, and that he is still loose on UB and stars. H0 has been doing great at the Party Supers this year, he has a 2nd and a 1st so far with many more on the way.

    GL Nutz,

  13. The majority of the new school do not have expenses to the extent of the old school, hense their br soars without ever taking huge expense hits. I'd go as far to say that the majority of their br is bigger then the old school.

PokerH0 being tight-- yeah ok, just a week ago at my UB $200 mtt table I watched him limp utg with 73os(nine handed) and continue to play for his stack in a limped pot with flop of 764--yeah tight as a rock.

The best players are the ones who can play all forms not one or the other--and those guys get the most chicks.

Gus Hansen is back in the big game after rebuilding from the first time he went broke in it.

  14. I don't usually respond...but that was good stuff.
  15. "In cash, if you make better decisions than your opponent 90% of the time, you wil be very profitable. In a tourney, if you make better decisions 90% of the time, it all depends on when the 10% happened. Early = no problem, late = hasta la bye bye."

This is absolutely true and why it is so hard to make money just being a MTT player. You can play great for 5 hours and get to the top 5% of a 1000+ man field, which is outstanding, and have Aces all-in preflop against A-K lose and be gone just like that. This just doesn't happen in cash games, because the vast majority of the play is post flop and good players outplay the idiot donks and take their money.
  16. awesome post. i don't have a job because i'm in school right now, graduating soon...but i'm definitely getting one. it's true, to be "online pro" is to have a tight sphincter--to make money winning tourneys, you have to finish top 3......12 pound balls, you gotta have them, sometimes. that, as oxymoronic as it might be in such a controlled game of poker, is good advice.

i also enjoy the part about your kids. i like that, no kids for me yet, but i've got a much younger sibling to spoil with my next big win. i'd like to roll like that. F*ck yea, trips to the Atlantis. can't argue with your post, your play, your attitude, your style...Nutz, i have only played with you in a handful of tourneys and seen you play...but after this post, much MUCH much respect.

    peace
    Busta

Google is such a useful search engine. Especially for the important stuff.
