I run a non profit in Illinois helping veterans and have done some research on having a poker tournament as a fund raiser. In Illinios a 501(c) is allowed to have 4/year. We have 3 offices throughout the state so that really isnt alot.
Here is my question. I have noticed bars will have poker tourneys and I think they get away with it by offering prizes vs. money? Is this a correct assumption? If I were to get prizes donated from local businesses would I be able to hold a tourney?
I have tried to google this question with no answers so any input would be greatly appreciated. -
Well, every state is different, so you'll need someone versed on Illinois law. But, one thing is that many bars are actually running illegal tournaments, and everyone is just turning a blind eye to it. That's how many are "getting away" with it.

Even though they are talking about online gambling at first I think this section pertains to your situation, hope this helps......
"Although states such as Illinois have banned Internet gambling, gaming for charitable reasons is not banned. Non-profit organizations and other such institutions are allowed to host gambling games for pro-bono purposes."
