  1. So I got laid off from a good job yesterday.... was pretty much blindsided and never saw it coming. I've been playing backed part time for most of this year and have seen a little bit of success live and been doing ok at the midstakes online with very little volume. I am thinking about diving into playing fulltime and give it a go and see if I can make something happen since things suck here in California. I have very little money saved up but unemployment will barely pay my bills. I was hoping to hear your guys thoughts and maybe some advice and what I should think about before hand. Thanks!
  2. As long as you are continuing to look for a job in the meantime, it seems like a good way to keep pulling in some money, especially since you are backed and a bad downswing would not negatively affect your actual bank account. But I wouldn't recommend trying to make it your career until you know you can be successful at it.

  3. If your bills are covered then go for it, only one way to find out. What's the harm in trying so long as your play within your roll and you don't have monthly cash flow needs? But as Wes said, keep looking for jobs in the meantime.
  4. not mtts... sngs would maybe be alright

  5. I would advise against it. It is so much tougher to win and do well at poker WHEN YOU NEED TO to pay bills and such than when you are playing for fun a few times a week.

The pressure and stress will likely eat you up very quickly. Each bad beat will feel 10 times worse.

    Go find another job asap.
  6. Play full time and actively seek full time employment elsewhere.
  7. If youre backed then I really see no downside as long as you are actively seeking full time employment as others have said.

  8. Maybe live.. def not online.
  9. U need at least 3 batches to start playing full time imo

  10. NO WAY. not trying to be a D. i suggest this u find a job to fit around your fav time to play get better at this craft. make sure that money atleast scrapes by with the bills. from job.

2nd. Use winnings from poker to buy materials or coaching for poker. and get many many friends that can handle u talking about poker all day.

    3rd. BRM

4th. No money in poker unless u a winner.

p.s. i assumed u were talking tourney not cash
  11. if u were a post work grinder w/ tons of volume and good results and all you had to do is increase ur playing time to earn the amount of money you need to be successul i would say go for it.

but you say you have very little volume so its gonna be hard to know how good you actually are. this is a perfect time to increase volume and learn more and get better while looking for a job. if things are going well w/ poker at this time maybe just look for part time work so you can play more poker afterwards.

    i'd go w/ this
  13. I think it wouldn't hurt to take a shot...but you have to maintain enough money for your bills and other important items. Give it a couple of months and if you can manage your bankroll it shouldnt be a problem, but Gl giving it a shot!
  14. While your lookin for a job it might be okay, but don't give up looking for a job in hopes of becoming a pro, alot is involved, there is a difference between becoming a pro, and being forced to become a pro...gl tho

  15. maybe post ur nicks

  16. No. playing professionally is a lot harder than you think. The swings are crazy
  17. I got laid off a year ago, binked a tourney had the same idea. I still looked for work and over the summer up until 3-4 weeks ago i was working part time and not really playing much. At the start of septemeber i decided as my part time work was about to stop to try and build a bankroll.

starting with $5 i played 9 man $1 stt and with bonuses turned this into $150. Moved up to $3 stt and got up to about $700 and hit the $6 stt's. Over a small sample i was running even and couldnt beat these all of a sudden i didnt have the will to want to grind 7 hours a day. After taking time off i won a $11 mtt for 4 figures and took some shots which paid off. I now have a nice roll and have cashed a significant amount out....all this being said i would still not want to play FULL TIME...its draining it puts a stress on relationships and everything else.

I love being able to play when i want and what i want but i wouldnt want to rely on poker for life.

So like everyone else has said play but look for work, its tough to find work atm but if you balance looking and playing it should work.....DONT think if you bink a nice score you dont need to keep looking for a job, i made this mistake. Varience kills!. GL OP
  18. Wasn't there a guy a few months ago who wanted a 20k bank loan to finance his future online poker career?

MCDONALDS MOTHA FCKA MCDONALDS THATS WEHRE u need to be at
  20. Def play full time while looking for a job. Just make sure to keep your priorities straight, aka make finding a job your number 1 priority.
  21. That is a bummer man, and yes fuck California, State is going south, unfortunately I live here as well and have a lot of friends in your situation. One door closes and another opens though, maybe this is a start to something really great for you within the game. Def some good advise on here, hope it works out for ya no matter what you decide, GL.
  22. Seems like the opinion on p5s, has gone really negative in the last 12 months, towards making poker a career?
Even a lot of the professionals seem mostly downbeat!
    Whats changed guys?
    Or am I mistaken?

  24. OP maybe take a shot at some hsmtts too? Could use some new players in the player pool.

In all seriousness just play more man what's the big deal? Its not your money and you have an income to pay ur bills and nothing to do with your time. Sounds like your decision was made, asking ppl what to do isn't going to help u. Just DO IT.

    +1

  26. Like the Pope said pressure. Poker is a crazy game. And when bad beats come, the pressure will mount more. I advise to keep looking for work always. Never give up times are tough. Dont give up remember if your qualified and can do a great job a smart employer will hire you. So market yourself, and think of yourself as an intelligent quallfied asset to a company. The time to go pro is when your poker earnings outweigh your regular life earnings. then you go pro as a business decision. I advise wake up early start 8am job search until. 12 pm. Then play poker. the time is coming when more and more people are self employed. Companies don't look after employees anymore, politicians have wrecked Americas job base -everything is service industry now. Many things can be done over computer. Its a changing world. Take this time to think of possible entrepenereual schemes College is a great place to meet girls. I have an advanced degree in suffering so i feel qualified to help. Gl!
  27. If your playing backed it will significantly help, With your situation you should probably drop down limits and bulk grind more. You'll probably end up making more money and won't have as crazy swings. Will give you more stability too:)

  30. I wouldn’t consider a 3k MTT score the "BINK" you need to even remotely consider this as a JOB. IMO
