I was daydreaming at the office today, and when I daydream, I think about poker, or golf. Today I mixed the two and came up with a crazy fun idea for a grinding competition based on a golf scoring system.
The ideas for bets around this are limitless.
Unfortunately I would never have the time to run this, because I am not a grinder, I don;t play much online, and I have a demanding full time job. So I am throwing the idea here for somebody who would be interested in running this.
The concept:
18 tournaments (best for Sundays for obvious reasons) that would compose the 18 holes of a golf course. Each tourney will be given a par (3-5) based on a difficulty index. Two par 3 and 5 and five par 4 for each of the front 9 and back 9. Total par 72 as most golf courses. You get a score on your "scorecard" based on the par and your finishing position in the tournament. The final score on the 18 tournament course defines the payouts. Obviously there is a buy-in for the competition.
The course:
Chose 18 tournaments (can be across different sites) that will compose each hole. They will represent holes 1-18 based on their starting time.
Calculate an index for each tournament by multiplying the number of entries by the buyin and divide by 1000 for smaller numbers. E.g. a Sunday million with 8500 entries will have an index of 1827.5. A 33 buy in tourny with 500 entries will have an index of 16.5.
Count 3* the buy in for a rebuy tourney.
On the front 9, the two lowest indexes will be par 3 (they should be the easiest because either the field is small, or the buy in is small compared to others). The 2 higher indexes will be par 5. Others will be par 4. Same for the back nine.
The scores:
Based on your finishing position, you will have a score on your scorecard like this:
1st: thats a hole in one, even on a par 5. Very difficult to get, but very rewarding for your card
2nd-3rd: thats an albatros, 3 under par. For par 3s an 4s you actually get a hole in one, on par 5s you get a 2.
FT, but higher than 3rd: Eagle, 2 under par. H.I.O. for par 3s, 2 for par 4s, 3 for par 5s.
Top 5% of the field but not FT: Birdie, 1 under par
In between 5-15% of the field: Par
In between 15-40% of the field: Bogey, 1 over par
In between 40-80% of the field: Double bogey: 2 over par
Over 80%: triple bogey, 3 over par
Not played the tournament: 4 over par. So people who miss a tournament, or wish to skip one or 2 are still in the competition and have a score at the end to compete.
Add all 18 scores, and you have your total score.
I actually put together a spreadsheet that does all of the above calculations automatically, except assigning the pars. I made some testing and it works great. Derek8 shot a 102 on April 11 using all the highest buy-ins tourneys on stars. I think he didn't cash in once. On the same day Hoodini10 shot a 109 playing only 10 holes, he had 2 FTs with a 2nd place on a par 4.
The betting:
As for all competitions, players send the entry fee to an escrow/ the organizer. Side bets could be organized in between 2 or more players for:
- Overall lowest score
- lowest score on back/front 9
- most pars/birdies
- ...
I'm also thinking of a system to give players a handicap based on their P5 TLB points and having a gross and a net competitions.
You could even transpose that to the WSOP, now that would be cool.
I'm going home now (i'm in asia) and if this thread is still on the 1st page tomorrow, i'll do more thinking about it.
Let me know what you think, ideas, interest in trying to run this, flaming... -

good idea.
but how does your boss feel about 1: day dreamimg at work and 2: taking up so much of his time preparing a spreadsheet for your idea.
can i come and work for your boss?? -
I am almost the boss, I do have a boss who cares about having the work done. I delegate the work to my team.

And to my boss i would call that brainstorming an idea. I am in the business of creating BS out of my brain: PR. -
It would not be that difficult when you understand the spreadsheet I have prepared. It would be long though since the organizer would have to enter in the sheet the tournaments, number of entries, buy-in, pars (all of this once per tournament), and then the finish position of all participants.

To me it sounds pretty fun actually. You could do so much with it, have partners, skins games, etc. Seems pretty difficult to organize but it would definitely be fun and add to the normal grind.
Although I believe for a 20 ppl competition, 1-2 hours would be needed after the last tourney is over to come up with the results.
I'll try to upload a googlesheet later. -
I love this idea! Im not qualified to play the tournies but it would be so much fun!

Thanks

Still looking for more interest and somebody who could run this. I'd be happy to give the tools and work on the details with that person. We could do a trial on low/mid buy-ins on a sunday soon.
