Arthur,
a couple of things...
1) sitting in the BB there, I'm ok with your single raise there with AJ suited...you got the SB out and you have the limper thinking you have a good hand.....but checking here isn't bad either.......if the blinds were higher you could have tried to make a move on the pot, and take down the blinds...but the risk is more than the rewrad in this case
2) ok you lead out for 4k, and you get reraised to 8k..this screams he has a Queen..you have to lay this down here.....your drawing to 3 outs....I think the minimum he can have here is mid pair. He's putting in 1/3 of his chips.........U know he's calling if you go all-in (only 4,300 more chips to him).
all in all it was just a bad spot for you
Good luck, and I hope this helps a little,

i think reasonably you only have to options that i would consider good.
A:) you bet much more than a single raise in the big blind something closer to 4x-5x the big blind. this accomplishes a couple things, it helps defend your hand since you are out of position, and it forces the limper to better define his, also it shows him that most likely you are pot commited to the hand, so he can be fairly sure you are going to move your chips in if you catch any of the flop, leaving him no room to make a play on you.
B:) your only other alternative is a check in the big blind, take a flop and see what happens. it doesnt cost you anything more to see since you had to pay the blind anyway, and at least gives your hand a few creative possibilities, ie: playing a check-raise on the limper if the flop hits your hand, or strongly lead betting an all rag flop representing a big blind special.
hope either of these suggestions helped and good luck at the tables! -
Thanks Browerkid. I appreciate your feedback. I did make it 3k to go, the raise was 2k. Blinds were 500/1k. However I believe I should have made it 4 or 5k to go since my intent was to take down the pot preflop, even though he made a questionable call preflop. I think this was my biggest mistake and it led to subsequent mistakes. Checking would have also been a good option too (Although not in my nature to do so, lol).
I realized after his re-raise that there was a better than 90% chance he had the Q...but correct me if I am wrong about my last call/all in. I thought the pot odds were real close, not there but close. I would have been alive but crippled if I folded. To me, there is no difference going out in 60th vs. 10th. I am there to finish top 3 or 4 at least. Again, thanks for your feedback. -
I definitely don't like the raise from the big blind in this position. Because you raised pre, you are almost obligated to take a shot on the flop, and, in this position, that means you are putting your stack at risk with the possibility of getting re-raised for all your chips (as happened) with no hand.
Options are obviously:
A) Overbet the pot pre-flop (i.e. 4x or 5x) as has been stated to win what is already on the table.
B) Check, take a flop, and toss your AJ in this situation when your opponent stabs at the pot.
I am not an expert by any means, but I have been learning lately that, in poker, you're not waiting for cards, you're waiting for opportunities. And this was not your best opportunity to get your chips in the pot. -
Poker is a game of choices, and it is not a crime to make a preflop bet, miss the flop and choose to fold. Why risk your tourney on a bluff. Coming from me you all might laugh and say, "Sophiea, that move is your middle name", but the lesson I've learned, am practicing, and advocating here is simply PRESERVE YOUR STACK when you don't have anything and your opponent is willing to gamble with you. He probably has something. So avoid running into the brick wall at full speed.

Well said, i have found that to be my problem too. Bluffing into my opponent when he has a hand. I realize this but still continue to bluff, recently i have been containing myself and good things have been happening.

I think betting 4 to 5 times the BB is a tough move in this situation........your putting alot of faith in AJ, a hand that I personally don't like and raising up against a guy who has you more than 2X covered is risky.....he could easily have a mid pair (odd that he didn't raise from his position, but people call from there all the time), and put you on a steal.....now after putting those chips in the middle after the raise your out of position after the flop, and more or less obilgated to make a move at the pot....not a situation you want to be in.
If he had the less chips than you its a much easier play
