I am currently reading Winning Poker Tournaments One Hand At A Time (a great book) and have come across a term I am not familiar with. Apestyles uses the '+' symbol a lot (i.e. 8,8+ or K,Qs+). What does that + mean? My first guess is 8,8+ means pocket 8s or better (9,9; T,T; J,J; etc). Is that correct? If so, what does K,Qs+ mean? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You pretty much get it. KQs+ would include AQs, AKs...any suited cards better than whatever the "xx" in "xx"+ is basically...
-
I generally don't see KQ+. Usually KQ is thrown in looking like this: 99+, KQs, AJs+ AQo+. With KQ being the best of the kings (not including AK, that would be best of the Ax's) there is no plus.
To OP: These are ranges. When you are making decisions its best to have an idea of what the opponents range is and what the opponent thinks your range is. The better you can range someone's hand, the better decisions you can make. It takes practice but is definitely a skill to hone. -
So does QTs+ include A,Q? Is it QTs, QJs, KQs, AQs?
-
Q10+ would include Q10 and QJ, K10+ = K10-KQ A10+ = A10-AK 99+ = 99-AA
-
Wow; okay. That explains everything. Thanks a lot for the help!

I read this book 3 times it is awesome. Apestyles is a mathematical player, and his anaylisis were hard to follow I dont know the answer i just learned what I can. I learned the most from PearlJammer since his play is considerably tight. DOn't listen to apestyles math stuff, Use your head
What was great about this book was the way it teaches you to think through a poker hand. -
The answer is, if he donated aj+ he is saying that the other player has aj or better so your not thinking a9 a8 KQ+ is the top ten starting hands. In my opinion. The biggest mistake tourney players make is not understanding implied odds. When you start w 3000 chips blinds 10 20 play alot of hands 57 suited etc not k2 48 but 89, 45, 77 etc hands that jive w the board. Your objective is to bust conservative tight players w kk when you out flop them. This works well w these idiot small ball players. example blinds 10-20
they have ak they min raise you. Call him w anything j5 and when the flop comes, and it will kj5 then bet like crazy these small ball players will put in the chips w their made hands. Have fun while eevryone calls you a donkey and you stack chips. Eventually cblinds move to 75 150 you should have doubled up by now w 7000 chips while supertight pokergenious is still at 3000. W 7000 chips you can make moves, survive beats or take off into the statosphere capiche, dont wait for kk ak etc, at the beginning of tourneys. tighten up as game progresses. -
wat? "Tighten up as game progresses". Lololol. Do the exact opposite of this and you'll be fine. Tight early loosen up as blinds go up and antes kick in.

...Quite the opposite of this and you will be fine:)

In micro levels I play tight early, loosen up a little after antes kick in, tighten back up after we hit the money, and loosen up a bit around 12-13 players left. Tends to work pretty well. Shifting gears FTW!

Thanks guys. Appreciate all the input!
