I was thinking today about a few hands throughout my poker career (if you could call it a career) that had they gone differently would have changed my life significant.
Whether your a baller or a micro stakes player - What are the hands that went the right/wrong way to change your situation significantly.
Me, personally I dont play many big tourneys but losing a pot for the chiplead in the 10r 55k with 18 left when my AsQs couldnt find a third spade on the board. Or losing a flip with 66 on the FT of the 5r for a ridiculous chiplead.
Not a strategy thread, just interested in your triumphs/dissapointments -
Two hands in the Sunday Warm-Up two months ago. If I win one of these, maybe I am a much richer man. Who knows?
Hand #1: 12 people left, guy shove all-in UTG, I have KK. He shows AA.

Twice I faced that situation, in very similar spots:
600 or less players left in the Sunday Million. Top 100 stack. KK in BB.
The first time I had 70k chips, button had 60k. Folded to him, he shoves with Q9.
Flop 3 6 7 Turn 5 River 8
Second time:
UTG shoves for 15k with blinds at 1500-3000, UTG+2 shoves and has me cover for a few chips.
Holdings: UTG 10-j clubs UTG+2 AQos, Q spades
Flop Ks - As - J , spades Turn 9s River 6spades
In both ocations, villian made the FT -
3 hands stand out in my mind. Two of them involved chasing a fish to a higher level then I was used to.
First one was early in my career. Played a horrible player heads up at $.5/1 limit and smoked him. He then sat at an empty 3/6 table so I sat with him with like 1/5 of my bankroll on the table. Right away I got AA and we capped pre. Flop was rainbow AhQx6x and we capped flop. And capped turn after 3 of hearts hit. River was a blank heart and I just called his raise and he had J2 of hearts. Hurt like hell and set my bankroll back a bit. Oh well!
----------------
A year or two later I was playing $100 buyin NL when a fish spewed many buyins then left and sat at a $600 buyin NL table. I decided to follow since I was technically rolled for it but it was way higher than I had ever played but you know that type of fish, he was just THAT bad you couldn't not play. Long story short I get allin with KJ vs KT on Kxx flop and the river is a T. GG me for $1000+ pot, by far largest I had lost at that point. Oh well!
-------------------------------
Heads up final two in a big $20 buyin MTT, I had small chip lead. I raise T7s on button, guy reraises me and I call. TT3 flop, we get allin and he has T8 and the kicker holds. Not really a beat or anything, but I thought for sure I was gonna win that tourney on that hand and I'll never forget the feeling from extreme joy to throwing up in my mouth when he turned his hand over. Oh well!
------------------------
The tourney that changed my life was when I entered a $1 stud tourney when I was down to $6 in my account and won it for $82. I had made up my mind that if I went broke from my original $50 deposit I'd never put any more money online, and I came damn close to getting broke. Never looked back after winning that tourney though. Wee! -
45> KQ on J67Q board HU in FTP $163 almost a year ago. 8k difference between first and second. If I win that things may be pretty different, but maybe not.
-
whatever the biggest step was on party, lost all in vrs durabo earlie AA vs 46 pre :(
-
this weekend... stepped my way up to step 6 in the WSOP steps on stars... with 7 left, I'm in BB, UTG raises to 3x BB, at 100/200 level, I have 1500 chips left and have 99, I push, he calls and shows aces... /kill self
-
10 People left in the Sunday Million 6266 started.
I have about 1,500,000 in the BB, the SB has 4,000,000
Blinds are 120,000-240,000.
Hand for Hand play OBV. I am in the BB w/QhJh everyone folds to SB who shoves me, I tank then make the call. He flips 9-5o. He flops a 5, I flop a gutshot, and 2 overs, and then rivers another 5 just for fun for trip 5's. GG shot at $180,000.
Also, I got this short because I lost a coinflip a few hands before to the short stack. A-8o < 5-5.
I remember this tourney like it was yesterday, and it has been haunting me ever since. -
1/2 NL cash I sit down and take BB. $200.00 in front..at time was a lot {still is i guess}
Get dealt 96 off Ep limps folds to small blind completes I check.
flop 669 2 spades SB bets pot I call hping hes on flush draw limper calss.
turn brick goes check check check
river spade SB bets out like $20 ... I raise to $50 hoping guy behind caught as well
Limper raises to $100 SB calls I push {of course} guy behind pushes SB calls.
SB had flush i Show 66699 for the boat last guy shows 99 for bigger boat.
Went from winning biggest pot at thast time to busted was sick for sometime. -
bad- ak diamonds runs into AA for a 3-1 cl in the nightly 100k with 12 left in sb vs bb . fml.
good- aa>kk for wsop pckg -
got it in KK vs TT all in pre for a top 3 stack in the 50$ 50K a few months ago.
guy types in "folded QT"
flop: xxx
turn: x
river: T!
first was ~15K.. anything greater than 4th place woulda been huge for me. Was in the middle of a big downswing, and really needed it.. haha.
also lost a huge race with AK vs a guy who wouldnt fold his deuces in an 80bb all in preflop pot with 100 left in the Sunday Mill. coulda been big! -
QJs < 44 to bust 8th at ftp 400k, I had already won two coinflips in that tourney so ftp would clearly not let me win three.
-
The Moneymaker freeroll from a couple years ago was my break to get a bankroll started
this was my only suckout, I was really shortstacked and I used the good ol' premature gg to win.
I went to on get 23rd and $500

2 hands this past sunday.
first one w/63 left in the 2nd chance. for a top 5 stack -
QQ in MP, UTG raises to 6k, blinds 1k/2k. we're both deep so i flat. flop QT6, 2 diamonds. he bets out 8k, i raise to 20k, he shoves, i call, he shows Ad8d. River diamond. would have put me in great shape.
second one was w/48 left in the 750k. also for a top 5 stack -
KQ in BB, folds around to SB who makes it 24k @ 4k/8k. again, we're both deep, and i have him covered by about 90k (me 230k, him 140k). flop K78, 2 hearts. he bets 40k, i shove all in and he calls w/3h5h. obv river heart.
love reliving those hands. -
ibluff man same situation ... $10 rebuy when the top prize was 14k on a nightly basis a few months ago ... 10 people left . 2nd in chips .. KK in big blind .. small blind raises me who is chipleader but just a few chips ... i shove he calls with a7 .. spikes the A .. i win i go to FT with massive chip lead and atleast 3 huge short stacks ... minimum .... for a college kid noyl playin tournies for 2 months .. that woulda been huge ... sick position for 14k and ending up with $400 cuz kk cant hold to a7 on a really really loose call ... good game me
-
Ahh the first 1k pot you ever won, only too look back at it and realize how big of a newb you were...even though I got in good.

4 left in WSOP Circuit $300 like 3 yrs ago, i raise A4hh, bb instashoves, I know the instashove is a weak sign, tank b/c I'm a noob and scared of busting, end up calling, he shows K8o, K river would have given me big chiplead 3 handed, cost me 50k.
10 left in Midwest Poker Classic $500, guy that has double 2nd raises utg, I flat AKss in mp(I'm 4th in chips) flop comes AJ7 2 diamonds, he checks I bet he instashoves, I instacall, he shows KdKc, turn d, river d, then I go on a 4 month tilting spree. -
I lost AK to AK with 40 (don't know exact but very close) left in the warmup a few months back, that one sucked but wasn't really life changing by any means.
Life changing one that made me shape up and really taught me a lesson:
I sat down with my whole roll just over $4900 probably 2 years ago on full tilt at a 25/50 table. I thought i was good at this time but definately was not. It took me 6 or 7 months to grind that roll up. I was dealt AA in the bb and it went raise UTG, fold, fold, fold, I reraise and he calls. Flop came K X X. I checked, he raised, I pushed, and he called and flipped over AK. You guessed it, a K hit the river. GG me. I needed that at the time though. -
Last year, final 2 tables of 10+1 20k gtd. I'm 4th or 5th in chips with 420k. Villain is 1st or 2nd with 560k. Blinds 5k/10k.
Villian min-raises UTG+1, I reraise in MP with KK, he calls.
Flop is QQx. Villain open shoves, I call, and he flips over KQ. gg me in 15th place.
Instead of being a massive chipleader and having a great shot at $5k, I have to settle for $180 because KK < KQ. -
I have lost flips that would put me in the top 3 at the final table of the 750k (when it was 500ki I think) and the mulligan. I have lost flips on the final table bubble essentially of the mulligan twice I think. I also final table bubbled in like 12th in the brawl.
I also remember like 3 years ago beating AA with QQ 2nd vs 1st in chips with 3 people left in the 3r before I went on to win it for my biggest score ever at the time though, so its all relative. Just wish I found the luck in the bigger tournaments haha -
damn than sucks, did they end up bumping u up a payspot?
-
sigh....
won my way into WSOP Main Event last year. Played a few month long series of sngs with friends to win my way in. was very excited and obv nervous too.
started out playing tight, took first level or so, just to get comfortable. finally was feeling good at table and starting to get involved. even had picked up a few reads on my table, in particularly the guy directly to my right.
about 5 hours in, i pick up KK in bb at the 200/400 level with about 22k stack. it folds to the sb who raises to 1200. i make it 3500 and before i know it i see out of corner of my eye two 5k chips hit the pot and hear, "raise". i immediately thought, "fuck". i was about 99% sure he had AA. there was no other hand i could put him on. plus, he casually tossed in the 5k chips and he had pushed in every bet, except for one other time when he had turned the nut straight.
i spent easily 2 mins, thinking of a way to say "fold", but couldn't do it. i shipped it in and after the hand was over and they counted us down, i was given back one green chip. and a chip and a chair was not enough for me.
i would love to know what would have happened, had i said fold, obv i would have had long way to go, but i would have been very confident and would have felt prob no matter how it turned out, that i had played my best. frustrating too, because i had specifically had conversations with people previous to playing about trusting my gut. poker had been going very well up to that point for me, and i have just been breaking even ever since.
i need to find a way to get back in that tourny. -
66 Vs KJ for 1.9M pot
33 left in $11 $100k Pokerstars
douche bag call him, gg me -
2006 Wsop main event
day 3 the money bubble had just burst i had around 80k (dont remember the blinds)
I had been playing really tight i raise in the cutoff with k-j of clubs.
big blind calls flop is 2-3-j i lead out for if i remember right 15k....about 75% of pot
big blind was a maniac had been raising 6-7 out of 10 hands and been re-raising everytime and showing bluffs, anyway he re-raised to 40k, i have around 55-60 left so i push he calls and shows aces....turn a blank river a king........only time i had my money in bad (except for last hand) went on to finish 9th -
Last years WCCOP Horse event on Stars...Was chipleader with under 100 to go.....got into a huge stud hand holding "queens and tens" and my oppenent was holding "jacks and fours" with one card to come out on 7th street....and a 4 peels off for him..crippling me and putting me on tilt to take 60th....$800 compared to 72k.....weeeeeeeeeeeeeee back to the grind!
