So think what you will about him, he is the all-time bracelet record holder, and most likely will be for some time, I mean Doyle is getting older and not playing very many tournies, and Johnny Chan isn't playing as much poker anymore and doesn't seem to be doing very well in the tournies he does play. So say Phil finishes at 14 or 15 ( a very reasonable number for him to finish at IMO). Will anyone ever catch him? With the expanding fields, and the continuously improving players it wont be easy. People talk about Dimaggio's 56 hit streak and other untouchable records, will Hellmuth's bracelet be one of those untouchable records when all is said and done? and if not who is gonna catch him?

Only if the poker boom busts and the fields go back to being smaller imo...

i can't wait to come back to this thread in the future after menlo breaks the record
-
It would have to be someone who excels in all forms of poker to take advantage of some of the smaller fields non holdem offer
-
well the world ends on december 23rd, 2013.
Also, this doesn't make phil hellmuth the best tourney player ever( i know that's not what you were implying) but i mean, beating donks senseless at the WSOP and then getting crushed by PROS in the WPT is worse than vica versa. -
I agree with Ape. Its just way too difficult post-Moneymaker to win as much as phil did during the 80s and 90s because of the ridiculous fields + skill of these players. The boom definitely has to bust for anyone to get 11 again in my opinion.
I also think this is really a shame because Phil might honestly be remembered as the greatest holdem player ever which is just embarrassing considering there are about a billion better =[ -
the record will be able to be caught soon (well ppl will start being able to pickup more braclets per yr) when the worlds finincial market collapses and all the market liquidity goes away then only players with well established bankrolls will be able to compete and the variance in tournaments will greatly reduce due to smaller numbers and the TAG's will reign supreme once again
-
You can if the fact that they are records that may never be broken
-
IMO ppl like myself, Sorel, JJ, Action Jeff, Zee Justin, or any of the other outstanding internet players have a much worse shot at breaking it then people like Erik Seidel and Phil Ivey. If there were two players who I think have the best shot it would def be them b/c they have a head start and also excel in non-holdem games, which is key like other players mentioned. However, I was watching reruns of the Hellmuth pot-limit holdem tourney that aired on ESPN last week, and came to the realization "wow, Phil Hellmuth is gonna be the all-time bracelet winner for the rest of my life and for all of the forseeable future" and like SC said, it saddened me.

if anybody, my money's on cunningham. he's got what 5 or 6 already, hes young and plays the $50k horse, $10k PLO Rebuys or whatever those other events are that get small fields. plus the sicko goes deep in the NLHE events as well.
-
yea cunningham has a good shot too, but he only has 4, while Ivey has 6 and Seidel has 8 (maybe 9, not sure?) and while that doesnt seem like a huge difference in bracelets it certainly is.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allen_Cunningham
Looks like Allen has 5...
didn't know siedel had 8 or 9. dont know much about his game. either way, i agree hellmuth is a tremendous lead. This is comparible to someone trying to break Cal Ripkens record of consecutive games... it could happen but would take a long ass time. -
I think it goes:
Seidel, Chan, Cunningham, Ivey, Brunson, everyone else. In terms of best chance to overtake Phil. -
i think i read that brunson said he's pretty much done with tourny poker except for the 50k horse and ME. ill see if i can find it.
-
Phil did just fine on the WPT the first couple of years. Given the enormity of his ego, it wouldn't surprise me at all if he takes the WSOP stuff more seriously than WPT these days anyway. Lets not forget how much broadcast time ESPN devotes to Hellmuth, whether he is playing or not. He doesn't get that at WPT events. Not to say he's trying any less, it just seems like he feels the WSOP is far more valuable to him as a brand and puts a lot of effort into it.
-
LOL, no shit Hellmuth isn't the best tourney player in the world, but the majority of the world probably thinks he is and will probably continue to as long as he holds this record. Because that is how tournament poker is portrayed in the media.
