Hi new to this forum. Will probably post here foten. I can beat the $5.00 SnG's on Stars, more through there being a high fish factor than through skill so I am not complete donk.
On to a hand. Thought I would start with this hand, I tried to slow play a little bit then sped up when I thought my opponent could suck out on me and well, he did suck out.

When I was called before the flop I didnt gather much info. This was the very first hand and they could have anything. First to act I checked with an ace and two hearts on board with the express purpose of a big reraise as I assumed one of them hit something and my set was obviously the best hand on this flop. They both checked showing weakness and I didnt want to scare them away so I made a medium to small bet on the turn. Got called by one guy now putting him on a flush or straight draw or just nothing which is often the case at this level. When a bad card came (any T beats me) I panicked and instead of check/folding I tried to bet at him and called his reraise despite knowing he had a T by now. Did I play this horrible? Any comments about ANY aspect of my play is very much appreciated. -
To answer your question: yes, you played this horribly. you basically begged this guy to draw and suck out on you. Lets walk through a couple things:
1) you take the lead raising to 4x the BB PF, which I like. Although being out of position, with the button limping in you need to represent your hand. Well played so far..
2) flop comes 8h, Ah, Js - you hit your set but you check. Mistake #1. If the two players behind you, BB and button, dont hit a thing they'll most likely check to get a free card and a shot at a draw. Turns out thats exactly what happens and button gets his free card. With hearts out there and possible straight draw, bet bet bet. and bet enough to get them off the draw.
3) turn comes - you bet a little more than 1/3 of the pot with probably the best hand (button wouldn't have limped with AA and probably would have bet the flop if he had a draw). With that bet, as I said, you're begging this guy to call (justifiable as you want as much money as possible). But you're giving him almost 4 to 1 on his money. With any draw or even middle pair and for that price I'm calling you all day long too
4) river screws you. You're S.O.L unless button was drawing to hearts. Nothing you can do. I think you have to bet here to see where you're at so I like that. If you get raised (like you did) then you've got a decision to make: pay the donk off or make a big laydown
Recap: bet your hand. With it being the first hand in the SNG, everyone wants to play questionable/absolutely disgusting hands and crack somebody. If you hit a big hand, bet at it and make people pay out the ass to hit their runner-runner gutshots -
Thank you for your advice. I think you are right and I have done this in the past. It is something I have to rid myself of. I slowplay great hands that arent the nuts far too much and get outdrawn. I really need to learn to be more aggresive with good hands. I am more aggresive with bluffs and marginal hands than I am when I know I have the best hand. This will also make me extremely readable. Thanks for the advice again and expect a good few more of these examples of bad play from me in the future lol. Still learning.
