First post... here goes...
So I'm playing in a 13 person home game when the following situation came up. The villain here is a loose player who likes to play lots of pots. I've seen him donk away lots of chips on stupid bluffs, but I've also seen him make a similar play and showdown the nuts, so in short he's fairly unpredictable. In this hand he is sitting under the gun and I am in the cutoff with 9 players at the table.
Blinds 50/100 my stack = 2000 villain's stack = 6000 my hand = KJo
Action goes around to me (in the cutoff) and I decide to raise to 325 with KJo... but I wasn't paying attention and the villain (under the gun) had already raised to 250. Since I had declared to raise but only threw out 1/2 the min raise, it was decided that I had to complete the min-raise. This put the bet up to 400, and back to the villain who had to call 150.
Perhaps following in the footsteps of my donkey move, the villain declares a re-raise which he wanted to be 300 more chips on top of my raise but instead he just says "raise" and throws out 300 chips, making it just another min raise. The bet is now up to 550, and back to me to call another 150.
At this point the pot is 1000 chips and I need to call 150 more to stay in. I've seen my opponent open with a weak bet UTG and make a weak re-raise when his bet was raised. Here I put the villain on two high broadway cards, or a decent to high pair... and I'm not too happy about my KJo. I don't really like my hand, but the pot odds are irresistable so I call. Is this the right move or is there any reason to fold right now?
Flop = J 9 8 rainbow
Villain: Insta-all in... after I think for awhile he says "you better fold if you want to keep playing", but his body language seems nervous.
I fold.
Is there enough information in this hand to make this an easy fold? I struggled with it for a couple minutes but started to think of likely hands I could beat. The only hands I can put him on here that I beat are AK, AQ, QJ or TT... Any pair higher than 7's (exept T's) has me beat as does AJ or some unlikely 2 pair combo. The pot is 1150, and I have 1450 left in chips so pot odds suck. Is this a good fold or am I a weak-tight donkey? -
edited: misread action
The rest of the hand is tough, KJ sucks against a maniac...call the reraise and hope to hit the flop hard (strong draw or 2pr). Flop is tough call but if you think villain is just as likely to push with a worse hand than its a call. If you think he's "mostly" pushing with better hands, than folding is fine. -
I think the other response somehow put you in the blinds. You mentioned you're in the cutoff, which puts you in position for the hand.
It's a no-brainer call for another 150.
But, after the flop, I think you made the right fold. You know your opponent better than me, but, you aren't going to find a lot of players 3-bet preflop with anything other than a high pair, especially for a min-raise.
On a scary flop, your opponent pushes all in to eliminate your odds of drawing out. I'm thinking he's got AA/KK here, or QQ with the gutshot, or TT with the open ender.
The only hand you're beating here is AK/AQ types of hands and would he really min-raise with that?
With 1450 chips left, you've still got some chips left to throw around.
I don't think your opponent has a monster here (a set or the nuts straight), but I do think that you're considerably behind and drawing to only a handful of outs. If, however, you think that it's likely that he would play this way with AK or 77, you could make the call.
I'm folding though -
I think calling pre flop is a must. On the flop, I support the lay down. Live to fight another day. Are you willing to risk going broke with top pair second kicker on a physical tell?
The friends I play with live are always making calls based on what they think are physical tells. I reckon they are the most over rated thing in poker, physical tells, not friends. They can so easily be misconstrued. Is the guy nervous because he flopped a straight and is looking to knock you out? Is he nervous because he has an over pair and is fearing a flopped 2p or a straight? Is he nervous at all? Might he just be excited that he managed to get so much money in the pot with aces? -
Postflop I believe he said that because he
- had a real hand
- didnt like the draws on the flop and wanted to win it right there.
Good fold. -
Thanks for the responses. I was hoping I had played it right after screwing up... it always sucks to make a mistake, but what's most important is to pull it together and play the rest of the hand correctly. I'm now more confident I made the right play. Thx
