I suck at tournaments I think. I have never brought in a huge score. I think I know what I am doing but apparently I dont otherwise id win or something. My background. Been playing since jan of 06. Started in sngs, did v well, moved to cash and have been successful there as well. For some reason I either really blow at mtts or just run bad(which is possible I guess, seems like some stupid beats have prevented me from a few huge scores). Anyways, to those of you who are good at donkaments, how did you get good? I have HoH's and have read some of them, but not everything because I basically knew everything already... If anyone wants to help me with mtts, I can help them with cash games or sngs or something, just hit me up. Anyways, thanks in advance for any advice, holla

I'm not goot by any means, but I have the HOH 3 vols, and I still reread them, helps me get in the mind set to make good plays and good reads. I also dont think I know it all already, everytime I reread it, I learn another little thing, and they add up
my .02 -
good point... i guess I could reread them. Tournaments for me are just cash game-like early when there is some play, and then pure icm decisions and theory late. Dunno. I think a big problem is I get bored and start trying to create action and end up putting myself in very marginal, possibly -EV situations...

re-read HOH volume 2 inflection points
try to pick your spots more carefully
that was my biggest leak... before reading that i only had 1 final table on stars, plus a few $20 180 final tables. i'm still not that good but after studying that section intensely my results have dramatically improved -
"I have HoH's and have read some of them, but not everything because I basically knew everything already... "
With this mentality, you will never get good. Approach every book/person/article with the view of a skeptic and analyze what's being said. Be sure to keep in mind that what you are reading is simply one person's opinion and that it's not the only way to approach tournaments. There are a million different styles that you can play and the only way to find out what works is to keep playing and evaluating different situations that could have been played differently. If everyone at the table played an identical style, poker would be an easy game to beat. -
Just play a lot of tourneys within your bankroll, try to find a style that you are comfortable playing. Join a training site like PokerXFactor or Cardrunners. Reread HOH, and try to digest everything in it. It takes time and experience to get better, its not a week long process. Just be patient and work a lot on your game, you will eventually find yourself making strides and that big score will be just around the corner.

ronjon, already a member of pxf and i didnt find the videos terribly helpful... I am a member of cardrunners but we dont get many good mtt vids, although the ones by AJ have been great. I guess I probably just need to play more mtts. the 20$ 180 mans seem like great practice, but they are fairly small stakes as far as I am concerned. I have a hard time focusing when playing for such little money :(. Oh well

you have a hard time playing for such little money, and PXF videos aren't helpful? watch the Rizen stars million series or any of the brsavage videos.

Just from reading some of these posts I get the impression that you may be too impatient for MTT's. You admit that you get bored, you don't read books because you assume you know it all, and you don't wan't to practice in $20 tournaments because the action isn't big enough for your taste. Sounds to me like you might have a problem with patience. I could be way off here, but that's the impression I got.
If it is indeed patience that is a problem then maybe MTT's arent for you, you are already good at SNGS and Cash games so you can allways just stick with those if you end up not improving in mtt's.
Other than that I think everyone else has good advice, allways try to learn and never assume you know something because in poker there is allways a different approach or perspective to something.
My 2 cents -
recently I read a post by CTS in the MSNL section of 2+2 that stuck in my head when giving advice, and about advancing my game in general. I think it applies here too.
basically he as addressing a player who was like 8- 12 tabling low limit full ring cash games. this player was looking to move up in the future. CTS posted that this was probably the worst way to advance your game, and it woudl be better to play fewer tables of SH play.
how this can apply here is I am wondering what limits and what size fields are you playing? forget BR management for a moment, you are looking to improve(w/o going busto obvi). big field lower limit tournaments are not the way to go about this. try expanding to smaller sites, and playing smaller trnys with a buy in amount that is significant to you(maybe $30 instead of $10 for example). a smaller field will give you a lot more bubble/ ITM experience which is by far the most important part of tournaments. a higher buy in will cause you to focus more, and not make stupid plays, because you care about the money. the 90 and 180 man sngs on stars wouldn't be a bad idea either, and the play in the $20's is so horrible even marginal MTT player will make money in them long term.
while a big score is what everyone wants, you should be aiming to improve more than anything. -
u call how we make a living donkaments and want advice? no thanks

LOL DONKAMENTS

I would first learn to spell "good".......Perfection/observation in all areas usually translates well in your game. Sorry, but when you don't use spell check; you leave yourself open to this kinda stuff.

some one talked about Patience, and tahts a big thing, i mean i have done ok for myslef in donkaments, but i think i could potentially be really good, if i had more patience. I just make stupid time bluffs, squeezes, etc. and i often get bored and go psycho, and just raise litterally every hand. def. a big leak in my game, when im playing my A game, i thnk im a pretty good darn good plalyer, but its hard for me to play that good. I can only think of a couple times, where i played my best possible, and i have had good results. So just remember, pick your spots, and play smart poker.
