  1. I used to love this game. I used to lose money at it. Now I hate this game. Now I make money at it. I'm just in such a funk and even though when I play I make money...which I need, but I just hate playing now. I've tried everything...switching to cash/turbo sngs/etc. but nothing gets me out of it. I've tried 3month breaks and they work for the first week back but then it's back to hating it.

I don't even play professionally...just as a little income on the side. What do you guys do when you get burned out? I honestly could quit playing cold turkey tomorrow and never be interested in playing again and I don't know why...it really sucks.

Its definitely affecting my play. I won't play MTTs because I don't play like I used to. I've focused on SNGs because they're fast and soft which are great but it still takes all my willpower to start up a session when I need to.
  2. good post i feel same way currently. Just take time off, get away from the game. If you come back and there still is no desire to play there is no problem with pursuing other life ventures. Or look into other aspects of poker like backing players or maybe you like live much better than online. But if whenever you play poker and you just hate it, your mind/body is telling you to do something else. . .

  3. Look at your poker winnings as a means to an end. Set yourself a goal like $2k profits to pay for a cruise. And when you get that - stop playing until you take your cruise.

When you come back, set another goal (like a kick ass TV/gaming system).

This way - you may not like the game, but like where it is taking you.

  4. Try playing some low-limit HORSE or 7-game or something you normally don't play. I sometimes get into NLHE funks and play a diff. game for nothing, fun sometimes even.

wow ....summed me up perfectly ....I did really well at MTT's, just cant get myself to sit those 7-8 hours to play one no more ....even tho I am really ahead of most players at the $24 levels and down ....

I spent so much time into learning Sit and goes and MTT's, and now that I am finally successful at it I don't have the love for the game no more .....It was so much funner when I was a losing player lol ....

Really interested in the responces you get on this post ....
  6. Everybody goes through it imo. You just need to set benchmarks for yourself. Whatever that may be, money made, increasing your ROI, mastering a different form.

Try switching over to low stakes omaha and try and become a shark at omaha.
I personally have gone through the same shit and luckily for me I am like you where this is just a hobby that if i can buy some extra fun stuff i succeeded.
So if you really can't get into any more after trying out new stuff, just quit until you get the itch to play again. Rinse and repeat.
  7. LOL if you hate the game, you can't stand doing it as a profession, you can't stand sitting...fking quit already. Simple answer don't you think? Go do something else you enjoy for slightly less money...like getting a degree and an actual high paying job?

I'm just saying, doing something you hate but make money at is the same thing most poker players say about 9-5s. U'll hate life a lot more grinding at a job indoors and losing money in the process most of the time with mtts, or grinding sngs for a dismal 5-15% ROI. No one can change your love/hate for the game. You've tried different formats, games, etc. It's really time to shit or get off the pot. If you want to do it as a side income, then it really doesn't matter if you love or hate the game. Play when you feel like it. But grinding for a living is basically out of the question, and ur prolly not making enough to make up for your unhappiness if you are.
  12. poker is repetitive and can be pretty mind numbing at times, this is nothing new. if you have a job then I don't think you should guilt yourself into playing if you're not feeling it anymore, there are other more rewarding hobbies out there

  13. Ship .02 to drybes and ur boomswitch will be on!
  14. Meh, I just take time of during burnouts. Dont force it... if you do, you won't play right which leads to losing. Find another hobby or something. Its a great game and a great way to make a living but as soon as you take the step from it being a hobby to it being a source of income... the fun tends to disappear.

Well, is it truely easy money? I really don't think he was being rude to you. Your the one saying that you pretty much hate sitting there and playing the game.

I think you need to take a serious look at it. You are treating this like a profession. This isn't recreation for you. So, when you play, on average (take a year), how much do you realistically make to how many hours do you invest (I would include any time on training sites, etc too that your not enjoying but do to get better). So, how much per hour are you really pulling, is it worth it?

I think these are great suggestions your getting......if your a pro (outside the learn a new game, which I think is an excellent suggestion for any player once they get a good grip on holdem or any other first game that they learn).

If you are only playing for money, even a little bit of extra income, then your a pro in a sense. Then, it isn't about enjoying yourself, it's about winning. Set aside time and play (you don't always wake up and want to go to your job, but you do, and you try to do well when you get there, treat poker the same way). If you don't make enough to justify doing this (and I think most players don't), then I'd just step away from the game. Find something else you enjoy. Maybe 6 months to a year off of only playing a weekend here and there is just what you need.

But, first and foremost, you need to figure out why you play, since that really should dictate what the answer is.
  16. What made it fun before?

Honestly, if you hate it and only want it as a sideincome, then just dont bother. And who knows, the desire to play might come back. But i think that since no matter what youve done you still hate it, you lack a good mental outlook on it. You view it as a source for money and nothing else. It would be the same as working at McDonalds flipping burgers... So either you need to change your mental outlook or you need to quit playing in my opinion.

Not that this is all that applicaple, but try to find your own personal motivations for playing. For me it is the fact that i have Cerebral Palsy and can't really do anything else full time and it is also the only sport or competitive activity i can compete with no drawbacks compared to others in, so that fuels me and makes me appreciate every day i can sit down and play, study the game, make money, talk to people about poker and life and everything it has given me. You just need to find something that fuels your fire for the game. If you cannot, then don't bother cause you will hate it and should pursue other venues in life imo.
  17. Anything that you do to make money gets boring, especially grinding sit n gos
  18. learn some PLO, or w/e game u wana learn, learnign new games is fun and could give u a new feeling about poker in generall.
