I can't stress the importance enough in taking go notes on every player at the table. Thats a easy way to keep track of what type of player they are. For the really really bad players, I put them on a buddy list and that is the first thing I check when I log onto a site. To answer your question, it is very profitable

Pokertracker and Pahud. If you are serious about cash games, you should be using them. Projects the players stats right onto the screen.
The problem with just basic notes is that you might mis-categorize a player because you caught them steaming. The numbers over a good amount of hands don't lie though.
