  1. I have great respect for Duff's game, so no disrespect at all is intended in this post. I really wonder how many other ranked players are in "financial ruin"??? Duff was/is ranked #62.
  2. With all do respect, I don't think these are the type of questions you ask or possibly even want to hear answered.

I know you didn't mean any disrespect, and neither do I, but financial history of any player is really no business of anyone here.
  3. If MC Hammer can go broke, anyone can go broke.

Let's just leave it at that.
  4. I guess it is enough to know that this is the type of result that can happen if you have this problem.
  5. What about Donald Trump? He went broke too at one point.
  6. I guess my point is that he is ranked and was "bleeding cash". I really hope the new ranking system addresses this. I havn't had time to read about the new system yet, but I think profitability should be the number one factor.

BTW -- one of the more profitable players on the net agrees with me.

  12. ^ no way ?
  13. can you elaborate?
  14. maybe rankings should be based on ROI, not big cashes, and big railbirds?
  15. well i spent it all on retarded things.. one week i spent 10 k lying around in my room on clothes and partying.. in new orleans i lost like 20 k and did not even play poker hardly .. just retarded things. now i gotta start al over again it blows, but i deserve it. been looking for a staker but no good offers yet sighh. i am in event 13 of the wcoop so maybe i can get a good lick tomm and be back on track!

  16. no offense but is it really profit if youre busto??
  17. It is profit as long as you spend the money outside of poker, which it sounds like he did.

  18. In addition to becoming proficient at poker, you Must be even better with Bankroll Management in order to beat the game over the long run.

This means identifying and correcting leaks in your game/life. Leaks in your game are well documented here on P5s and in poker books. Leaks in your life can be drugs, alcohol, being surrounded by destructive people, over spending, Compulsive Gambling; ie. games where you have no discernable edge....craps, Black Jack, Roulette, 3 card poker, Horse Racing, Sports Betting. Even in games when you have a discernable edge, it is highly likely to eventually go broke if you get outside of your BR. You can even go broke when you stay inside your bankroll.

I have gambled on just about everything for sick amounts of money. I have won big and lost big. I have since come to the conclusion that I preferred winning over the sensation I got from being "In Action."

If you play to be "In Action" you are destined to go broke.
  19. Because a player is backed does not make them busto. The reason many professionals are backed, and the reason they will continue to be backed is varying and personal. What you are missing is the fact that they are backed because THEY CAN BE, and you can't.

I have been backed when it made financial sense to me (just bought a new house, two new babies... etc.), and although I now play on my own dime and have done so for quite some time, I fully respect all good players, backed or not.

The reality of the poker world is that now, with so many tournaments both live and online, it takes superior cash management and a deep bankroll to play in volume. The deep pockets of a backer can help a good player by reducing variance thru volume and at the same time keep the players mindset right by creating a supportive environment.

    Soooo, BACK off.

    Chris.

  20. Some of the moral of the story is if you play high, you have to be VERY good to stay ahead of the game.

For example, I know one high player who ran fairly deep in one of the WCOOP events this past sunday. He cashed for maybe ~$3k. After all the Sunday's he played (rebuys, etc.) he was down for the day.

So, what if he didn't cash? Then he'd be down at least ~$6-8k?

Run bad for a couple months and you're down some serious cash.

Factor in a small drug problem and you're losing money for sure.
  21. *unneccesary comments*

    REMOVED :P
  22. When BR said "BACK Off" i believe he was making a play on words 'backed'. Not getting mad.

  24. gotnip, you have some serious issues dude
  25. how so? why can't i make an ubsurd post? dont take everything so seriously
  26. ubsurd post that wasn't even funny, that's the sad part.
  27. The tone of your first post was that there was a negativity to players being backed. Also, It is completely uncool to even make a reference about another persons wife and children.... There are many in this world who would hunt you down like a dog and decapitate you for such a reference.

Anyhoo, the point of my post is that I know first hand about backing arrangements, and for many the relationship can be a good one, for others it can be a disaster. It is absolutely a mistake to make broad generalizations about players who back or are backed... each situation stands on its own.

    Chris.

  28. and its absolutly a mistake to assume because you dont know someones p5 name that they arent someone who could be backed if they wanted it.

agreed? okay good. Ill take down the wife and kids comments, its already hard enough to keep my head on as is, dont need people trying to slice it off
  29. gotnip congrats on being a dueche
  30. getting back to the original question. I doubt many. I was talking to Muddywater in Aruba and it is shocking how many people we know from 4 years ago that still make their money gambling.
