Hi all
I've typed this out in full once but my comp crashed so I'll keep it short this time
I been re-watching High Stakes Poker on pokertube, and the hand in question is Season 2, Ep.1 (part 6/6 on pokertube)
Farha limps preflop, Negreanu raises to $3600, Mizrachi fold A8h in position, saying it's a tourny hand and that he would have called in a tourny.
I'm not asking about his play;
My question is why would he call A8h in this situation in a tourny and not in a cash game?
Anyone care to enlighten me? -
In tournaments you're usually playing a short stack (10-30BB) and looking to double up. In cash games everyone usually has a deep stack (50-100+BB).
With a deep stack A8 is not a good hand because it can get you in trouble (if you flop an ace you can win a small pot or lose a big pot) and in these situations hands like 87etc are better to play because you know where you are in the hand and can stack somebody with a well disguised monster. -
That's an interesting view, and I agree to some extent
I'm not sure if he was talking about shortstack or deepstack tourny play, I assumed he was talking early tourny, deepstack play.
But wouldn't A8s be a better hand to play deepstack?
If he was shortstack in a tourny I think folding's the right move with a limp and a raise in front of you, as if he hits the A he's likely to be behind and there's not many other flops that he's going to want to get his stack in with, which is obv the objective with a shortstack as you say: to double up
IMO this is the kind of hand you want to play deepstack for the very reason you said; if you don't hit the flop hard you can throw it away easily, even if you hit your Ace you can assume it's likely no good. So unless you see a flop with hearts or 8s you can just get rid, but if you do hit your hearts you're drawing to the nuts with the implied odds that go along with being deepstacked.
Those deepstack implied odds would be the main reason to make the call IMO
That said, I agree that personally, I think situation should be the other way round. I'd make this call in a cash game, I'd be much less likely to in a tourny (unless deepstacked)
But I'd still like to see other thoughts on the matter..? -
i dont think he is:(
