Sorry if someone posted this already, but this is ESPNs article on the players snubbed. Phil Gordon not being there makes no sense.
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/poker...amp;id=2351751 -
Some people couldn't make it. Phil Gordon is as good an omission as any. Hoyt Corkins has a bigger bitch than Phil Gordon IMHO.
-
While I agree with John Phan's and Michael Gracz's argument, I don't think snubbing was due in part to race. Men and Scotty Nguyen, Dee Leong, Phil Ivey, Tuan Le, John Juanda...and there's more "minority" players there too. I think throwing the race card at the problem is only going to create more turmoil in this whole situation - and if race was really a factor, then wouldn't Corkins and Gordon be in it?? It's just like the March Madness tournament - teams that should be there aren't, and teams that shouldn't make it do...in someone's opinion.
I'm sure that you were to look into it deep enough, I'm sure all snubs were due in part to money - probably paid to NBC by these "celebrities" who wanted to play in this. The key figure in this is Rene Angelil - and he's worth how much money?? Probably more than all the P5s' bankrolls put together with compounded interest. -
I think it applies. Asians represent a larger portion of winners and represent almost none of the online sites that sponsor people. You could argue Evelyn Ng but there are so many asain man that have performed well for long periods of time with no love.
-
in all honesty the snub probably saved Phil Gordon $20K.
Hoyt Corkins all in style would have been great for this event, I think he should have been in this.
The obvious reason for some of the celebrities is that if they managed to win a few rounds it would be a great story. -
Dee Luong= Mahatmas girlfriend? Jim McManus wtf? And of course none of the top online heads up players were invited: Joe Cassidy, Neverwin, Patrick Antonious etc.
-
beanie, John Juanda is wearing Full Tilt poker gear and chau giang(forgive if spelled wrong) is a representative of doyles room, and You gotta be kidding if you don't think that john phan and tuan le, men the master, and johnny chan have'nt all been approached by sites wanting them to be representatives. I am just shocked that you would even make such a statement. Fbeanie!!!
*edit F rene angelil and nbc too -
I liked that article...can't believe Gordon and especially Phan got left out. Mind-boggling, Phan would be on my short-list of "instant invites".
I think its just because its NBC...they're bringing back an "experiment" that worked out really well for them last year, and maybe they just don't get it yet. They think that their fan-base wants to see celebs (although this list of "celebs" is B-list at best) instead of good, consistent poker players. Hopefully the attention their invite process is getting will force them to change things up a bit next year. Still, I'll be watching, some of my favorite players like Juanda, Ivey, Hellmuth, Ferguson are all going to be there. It will be a great display of poker, despite the snubs. -
I believe Phil Gordon sold his company to Cisco for about $100 million, I think he could have covered anything NBC wanted. He also has 2 WPT titles, and a couple WSOP FTs. He should be there over at least 20 other players. Hoyt too.
-
I think that the asian players dont get the "love" or representation is b/c they just dont have the personality for it.
Ernie Els and Retief goosen are both awesome golfers but they dont get the endorsements that mickelson does cuz they dont have the personality -
EXACTLY!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Yeah you're right. Scotty Ngyuen has no personality.
-
scotty nguyen, while not a rep of an online casino, just inked a deal to represent the cherokee casino in oklahoma. I can't believe anybody would think there is racism involved in poker.
-
you don't know what you are talking about.
-
I was just responding to the stupid comment by gbmantis that asian players have no personality. There are plenty of asian players with personality. Scotty Nguyen being one of them.
-
when was phils 2nd WPT win? Did he win in season 4?
-
Asians are underrepresented in poker and I don't care if you bring that up in your next clan meeting.
-
Oh please don't say he won in the first season. That could really start the snowball downhill fast.
-
dude, as much as I respect you I have no friggin idea what you think you are talking about. I named people that are doing what you said nobody was. Either come up with an intelligent rebuttal or admit you are wrong.
