it started last august when i was playing 24/7. i started getting knots in my hands and sharp pains/numbness shooting through my hands and wrists. i thought it was carpal tunnel and went to a hand specialist in december after it kept getting worse. he said it wasnt carpal tunnel and acted kinda like i was faking it. so, i just tried to ignore it and just hoped it would get better. the last couple months the sharp pains started moving up my arms to my shoulders, back, and neck. it was mostly weird cramping i hadnt felt before and my muscles had this weird stringy feeling w/ occasional sharp/deep/scary pains. also, had sensitive areas on my scalp and my jaw muscles were sore.
other symtoms i started getting over the last couple months:
being cold is unbearable, i start shivering like crazy
feeling like my feet are swollen and cramps in legs
sharp pain on the left side of my chest, ive only felt this 10-15 times
the worst has been the past 4 or 5 days. ive had constant headaches and feel completely mentally worn out all the time. it's really hard for me to fall asleep and when i do it feels like the lightest sleep ever. never feel rested and my whole body feels like shit.
but, im very happy i finally figured out what is wrong w/ me. i havent actually been diagnosed w/ fibromyalgia, but im 100% sure this is what i have. it's hereditary, but one of the main triggers is being unfit and sitting in one spot 24/7. ive been in good shape for most of my life, but the last yr ive been in front of the computer 24/7. i have an appointment at the fibromyalgia center in vegas on the 28th.
im sure there are a decent number of p5ers who sit in front of the computer 24/7 like me. if u start getting similar symtoms dont let it get as far as i did b/c this really really really sucks. gl all -
I would just like to say that a lot of what is written in that post is inaccurate and u DID NOT get fibromyalgia from playing poker. I am a doctor of physical therapy and that is not how fibromyalgia forms.
-
My mother has fibromyalgia and I'm sure you don't have it. Hers has developed over 40 years and is hereditary. I'm sure you can't develop it in a year. If you're out of shape, that can cause this as well as just sitting can cause aches and pains. Get up and do something besides poker.
-
ya, i dont know very much about it. i read all that i could the past couple of days. i read that one of the main causes is being out of shape and sitting in one place a lot. and i read that in about ten different places. is that not correct? i also read that alot of the causes are debated by lots of docotors. some doctors dont even think that it's a disease and it's mental. but when u have it you know that it's real.
-
i really dont care if u think i have it or not. or can get it at all ages. i have a very high tolerance for pain and discorfort. and there is something very very wrong w/ me and again im 100% sure its fibromyalgia. i guess this is going to be a thread making fun of me and calling me a hypochondriac. i was going to wait until i was diagnosed but i cant get an appt until the 28th and i wanted to post it immed b/c i know if i read this post a couple months ago it would have changed my life

FWIW I did come down with some injury from online poker. I was eating dinner with wifey when I suddenly realized I could not pick up my right foot. It was like drop foot, I felt paralyzed (no joke kinda scarey). Anyhow they did a cat scan on my brain, which I think was just precautionary and than sent me to another Doctor where he found it to be nerve damage from kicking feet up and crossing them on desk. 5-10 days later I was fine...lol, it was pretty comical now looking back on how many times I tripped over my own foot during this time.

same thing happened to me only I got up to walk and fell on my face and almost broke my ankle

since being laid off work I get out and walk at least a mile everyday before or after sitting behind the computer all day -
[ ] you got this disease from playing poker

Because changing your lifestyle will just halt hereditary disorders and elevated levels of nerve substances (that are thought to be contributing factors) in their tracks, lol.

Hope it gets better for ya bro.
-
ok. i think i should have changed my post to this. i have all of these symtoms of fibromyalgia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fibromyalgia. not most, but all. and some are very bad pains and scary. i think i got them from sitting behind the computer 24/7 for the last couple yrs b/c i read that that could trigger fibromyalgia. i just posted it in case anyone else had the same promblems, but i probably shouldnt have posted it b/c its so rare.

1. Sorry to hear you aren't feeling well bro.
2. I have a lengthy history of mis-diagnosed/undiagnosed nerve issues and fibromyalgia is one of the things that has come up. So I know a fair bit about the symptoms and indicators.
3. A lot of nerve issues have similar symptoms, so don't go thinking that because you match most of what it says on wikipedia, you know what's wrong with yourself. See a neurologist, not necessarily at the fibromyalgia center.
4. Don't diagnose yourself though the internet and assume you have nailed it.
5. Wikipedia? Seriously, that's what you're diagnosing yourself with? Dear god no...
Good luck dood, but tread very carefully when it comes to thinking you know the reality of your situation because of something you read on the interwebz... -
very informative post, Doc...

You guys are all hella dick tho. I'm a good friend and roommates with thatsnice and I've watched him suffer with whatever his illness is for months now. For all those who are doggin' on him... let it be known that I'm the one who recommended he go online to search for symptoms in an attempt to find out what was wrong with him. The doctors he's gone to seem to have no answers for him, and treat him dick.
I think it's hella rude cause he posted this so that if anyone else felt "alone" like he did when he had no answers regarding his ailment, that they might feel some piece of mind in knowing they don't have some incurable or unheard of disease.
Likewise GAGS30, and all those who share his view... I hope you feel wretched when i tell you that thatsnice has never met anyone in his biological family and has no documentation of any medical past beyond his generation. So for him this is unknown territory.
Doubt he needs any more of your negativity when he's feeling so shitty. -
If you needed to read on a website that it's unhealthy to sit in front of a computer 24/7, something really is seriously wrong with you.
That said, I hope whatever is wrong with you is fixable.
PS: Your roommate needs to stop saying "hella." -
Hope u feel better op. This should be a lesson to all online players, that you need to take your personal health into consideration with this hobby/career. Here are some things that have helped me a ton.
- Sit up straight in our chair.
- Use a good ergonomic mouse and alternate your right/left clickers back and forth. Also use a wrist-rest beanbag.
- Use hotkeys, it will reduce your amount of clicks and mouse movements tremendously
- Eat healthier; try to avoid greasy fatty foods in your diet, especially when your grinding.
- Get your heart rate up for 30minutes or more everyday. This can be something as simple as going on a fast walk in your neighborhood.
- If you do feel wrist pain use a brace immediatley, and find out what is causing the pain.
- Drink a lot of water and cut soda out of ur diet. -
Word on the street is fibromyalgia = medical greens... in the Bay Area obv
-
Both my mom and sister have fibromyalgia and the disease has been greatly debated. My mom had to fight for social security for over 3 years because no one believed her and there wasn't enough knowledge of it. But it is a very real disease and my best advice would be to see a good doctor that would help you find out why your in so much pain. Best of luck.
-
ya, one of the main triggers is sitting in one place for a long time. hence, i got it from poker. obv most will not
-
You did a good thing by posting, thatsnice. For every 1 person that comments negatively, probably 2 dozen read it and benefit but don't comment. At the very least, it's a good reminder to take breaks from grinding and get pre-session and post-session exercise in.
Best of luck to you in your recovery no matter what it turns out to be and thanks for sharing. -
Regardless of what it actually is that ails you, I wish you the best and hope you get to the bottom of what it is sooner than later.
Also, additional physical activity can only benefit you (unless your Dr. advises you otherwise). -
I would recommend three items:
1. Find a local specialist in Pain Management. They will be the most qualified to determine exactly is wrong. I'm an on-line hypochondriac - I will go into WebMD or MayoClinic and add up all of my symptoms. Probably the best use for these sites are helping you best describe your symptoms. Track these symptoms and provide them to this specialist. And I hope that you have a decent medical insurance plan.
2. Redsign your "work" area. Find someone in the yellowpages who can help develop ergonomically correct environments.
3. Be prepared to play less. Be prepared mentally, physically and financially.
