I found myself seated next to Legs the other nite in a $3 rebuy at UB. I got to see him draw cards and couldn't believe the good cards he drew. The following day I observed 37 or so hands of sheet's sng play. He also drew cards like Legs, that is,. good hand after another after another...
I'm convinced these players regard themselves as good players and I wounder how much that thought contributes to their ability to draw good cards. Do their internal feelings contribute to their external reality? I'm considering visiting an "energy" guru to help me draw better cards.
Am I nutz? -
answer yes u r nutz, they get dealt the same way as every 1 else, hot some days cold others, bad beats etc. by watching and observing 37 hands--how many did they showdown? also if it was a rebuy and 2 cards are good for almost every 1 in the 1st hour. trust me the deck isnt 1 sided in there favor, they just play poker
-
Not so sure. I know I get up close parking spots better than most. How much of my ability to get spots is a fn of my confidence? That's the issue. Could internal thoughts affect cards?
-
I read a book called "The Field" in which they described an experiment as follows.
Setup: A radioactive isotope decomposes at a verifyably unpredictable rate. It is this unpredictability that poker sites "supposedly" use to create the basis of their RNG (random number generator).
Practice: Thay used the radioactive isotope decomposition to produce a completely random stream of 0's and 1's turning a a lightbulb on and off. So the light went on and off randomly throughout the sample. They sat people in a room and had them concentrate on keeping the light on or turning it off for an hour at a time.
Results: Over Millions of samples and people they were able to show a significant statistical change over significant samples that showed peoples thoughts and concentration could effect the light, either keeping it on or turning it off skewing the randomness of the isotope.
For what its worth I dont think this is so crazy. All things are interconnected in some way and perhaps more positive thinking will help you get better luck at cards. It sure as hell will make it more fun.

Adam,
I'm focusing only on the cards drawn. Ignore the skill and results, do some thoughts influence your draw? -
What I'm trying to tell you (more nicely in the first post, probably) is that is a silly and pointless thing to focus on. You can't change the cards that come out, only the way you bet, call, fold, and raise, and those things are affected by your attitude and confidence at the table.
The answer to your question is no. -
That's funny, I've thought that too seeing those hands. I think that your attitude definitely influences how you play. Who knows if it influences what cards you get. Ham radio rules.
-
This actually is interesting to me cuz Im tellin ya when I think the ace is comin on the river to bust my kings it does =)
-
Yes that must be the only logical reasoning, they think about getting good cards, therefore they get good cards, bc when Im at the table Im thinking about getting bad cards. and I get bad cards. lol, gimme a break man, thinking isnt going to change a F in card
-
I know if it does--it doesn't. When I'm sitting at a poker table and looking at a deck of cards, there's a card on top. It's a physical entity, and the laws of physics know nothing about what the "value" of the card is in terms of what game we're playing. That card is the same card, no matter what I think, no matter what I hope for, and no matter what I do with my chips. That card cannot physically change because I will it to.
It's really extremely self-centered people in general who believe that somehow their own desires or thoughts can affect random events. People joke around about how when they're not wearing their Red Sox jersey while watching the game at the bar, that could be "bad luck" for the team, and we all laugh and agree, because it's harmless and fun and everyone likes to be a dedicated fan, but if anyone actually believes that, they're unbelievably self-centered and really not too bright. It's the same with cards. They don't change, they're just there. Nothing you say or do without physically manipulating the deck will change what comes. -
I read an interview with Phil Laak who wont let the whole card cams see his cards anymore until the hand is done, he thinks the people working the equipment can influence the play of the hand. Its a bunch of mystic stuff I dont really get but Jen Harman beleives in stuff like that too.
Thinking positively definetly helps in my opinion, I get too negative sometimes and I feel like when I do that everything goes bad. Try to stay positive. -
whoever said it
if you think youre gunna get a a badbeat you will trust me
was playin a $50 HU lst nyt on ub
had 8-6 in BB, he raised to60 from SB i call, flop 8-6-3 i bet out he raised we get it all in n he shows 10 10 i knew the next card was a 3 n sure enuff it was -
Adam, well put. I was just trying to be polite.
-
Being positive IMO makes a much better poker player. I for one am always looking for the player at the table who thinks every card is a bad one. I will always put a mark on him and take advantage.
As far as Adam's comments. In live poker there is no way to influence the cards after they have been shuffled, they are known entities and cannot change once in place. That being said, this thread was started about online poker. In which electronic RNG's and statistical randomness are used to mock shuffle. As I said earlier in the book "The Field", they show that thoughts can influence random electronic events. Not saying I believe in it, just saying there is research out there which makes the conclusion that we CAN influence random events. If you are interested I will find it and post the author, its an interesting read on quantom physics. Also go see the movie "What the &*#@ to we know" goes into the same concepts.

There are still just 52 entities (cards) stored in the computer, that have the same properties as cards do in real life---they're unknown to the RNG in terms of value---it only understands that they all exist and all are equal. Believing you can somehow "think your way" to better draws is silly---the cards don't only affect you, they affect everyone at the table, and are a totally isolated system from your own thoughts/desires. They're also a system that's completely independent of the actions being taken in the game. I'm sure all the unscientific/superstitious thinkers out there may disagree, but they're wrong---RNG, physical deck, whatever, your feelings/thoughts/desires don't influence the cards.

Over time everyone gets the same cards.
Its how u play them that counts

There is something to be said for the parking luck though. I have never been great at getting the 1st two rows in a busy parking lot.
My Dad, on the other hand, was the Babe Ruth of parking in the first two rows of an extremely busy parking lot. It would happen almost 97% of the time within a minute of us hitting the parking lot. We hated the way he drived, loved the luck he had with parking.
He was in the "Zone" in a parking lot! He was the greatest parker of his time-he knew he was going to get the parking space, knew he was the greatest, and let everyone know after his many conquest.
Explain that? -
Exactly my point. I know I'm good at getting good spots. My experience proves it and as with your dad, everyone who knows me well, knows I'm good. I believe my conviction is helpful, and could it happen w/poker if I was that confident.
A good book on the subject is THE ATTRACTOR FACTOR BY Joe Vitale. Read it a while ago, not sure I buy the concept, but I'm not prepared to dismiss the possibility. -
AS a parking in first two rows expert this is why I get in and
My wife allways misses the first two rows.
She says she can't stop there is a car up her bumper; I say she drove too fast thru the row
She says she can't park there some one coming the opposite way will get it or the position she is in is holding up all the cars behind her; I say you nose the car out so someone coming the other way can see your waiting and you drive down the row slowly so everyone is backed up behind you but you are able to position so that you can leave a passing gap when you do see a spot
HOW DOES THIS RELATE TO POKER
The good players are allways scanning ahead by reading how the other players are going to walk to their cars ( they can see that the other players are going to play a hand);they know a space is about to be available; they know from past plays amd plays by similarly skilled opponents what cards the opponents are likely to be playing and when they can make donkey calls because some opponents only timid call with big cards and if flop is little it will favour their donkey call
They allways seem to get the best spot because they are looking for the best spot and not who else wants that spot
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED READING is Beaanies front page article on bad beats -
very well said skoky but i already told u it's the poker devil

Crossroads with Ralph Macchio is a great movie.

Though I certainly don't think online poker is rigged, it is FACT that some people get better cards, win more coinflips, etc. than others.

uh, ok... I think most mathematicians would say otherwise...

James Randi is a professional scam debunker. He debunked the psychic Yuri Geller's 'spoon bending' trick. Randi has a one million dollar prize offer for any 'psychic' or anyone else who can prove thoughts can affect physical events....his prize has been offered for years.....and no one has been able to claim it.....thoughts DON'T affect physical events.......Randi would LOVE to debunk the faulty light bulb 'experiment' cited in 'The Field' ......Lynne McTaggart (auther of The Field) is a huge proponent of 'homeopathic' medicine........the entire field of 'homeopathy' is one giant scam.....substances ingested after a one trillion part dilution and magically 'healing' people....this is simply the 'placebo effect'..........mental 'spoon bending' and psychic levitaion and mental poker card manipulation are all just fantasies.........
