  1. I'm buying a new computer soon, mainly for poker. Just wondering what the pro's and con's of owning an imac would be.

  3. Overpriced
  4. no,no, no.....although the Imac are really sweet, I suggest a 15" macbook pro and then a separate monitor too, like a 23" for example. Then you can put all your tables on the 23" monitor while having your lobbies, P5s, Aim, and your porn on the laptop screen.

    P.S.
This is my system and it rocks. 15" Macbook Pro 23" Samsung LED Monitor. Tournament shipping equipment it is, it is!

  5. As an Aussie, you can play on a bunch of sites that US players can't.

If you get a Mac, a lot of those sites will be off limits as most don't have Mac versions abd when they do, they pretty much suck.

You can get around by getting something like VMware Fusion or Parallel, that way you can run windows and OSX side side, but you'll need to flip for the VM and Windows versions.

Most Mac users qill tell you that they are the only way to go, and unless you know a fair bit about PC's i'd say this too. I know enough to get me out of minor trouble with PC's, but in the next 12 months when my PC and laptop really need replacing, I'll be getting Macs.

In Aussie $$ you'll need at least $2200, thats for the entry 21.5inch iMac with upgrades to 4gb ram, apple care plan and apple remote. I would also recommend the Microsoft office pack if you use any of it at home now.

If you have the money you can either get an extra monitor (the 30inch apple cinema display is the nuts) or you could get the 27inch display if you only want one screen. If money is not a problem then get the 27 and the 30 extra.

    cliffs..

    Pros
    - Awesome performance
    - Easy to use
    - best features in the OS, normally hey do everything windows does just 5-10 years earlier
    - great interface for you ipod/ipad/iphone if have one if them
    - you won't need to upgrade as often as windows. not sure about the OS but the hardware shouldn't lag as much and is easy to clean up
    - most upgrades are available for retro fit, where windows stuff requires new hardware more often
    Cons
    - really expensive to buy
    - really expensive to upgrade when you do want to
    - people may call you gay/ghey
    - if you start raving ti everyone about your mac, you'l just look like a fanboy regardless of how much knowledge you may actually have
    - they're so expensive i can mention cost twice $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
  6. I was thinking about getting one too...could someone post the major Poker sites that have a decent Mac version of their software?

haven't you guys figured out that his is one of the biggest common factors in how/why people have had their poker accounts hacked?

Plus being Aussie i doubt very much he uses AIM
  8. WHat do yo mean Aim is how they get hacked?

  9. Well, most (a very high percentage of if not all of) the players who have been hacked recently have all said that they had AIM hacked too.

Without having any evidence what so ever that AIM is the problem, it is definitely a program that is common between most (if not all) of the players who had their accounts hacked. I would be thinking that the hackers have used AIM to get access to other details like email, poker, personal details.

Like I said, no evidence, but I'm sure there is more than a couple of people who would agree with me
  10. I love my Mac...we haven't had a PC in the house for years.

But if I was buying a computer just for playing poker (and some porn surfing, I'm assuming), there's no reason not to go with a down-and-dirty basic PC.

  11. i have win 7 ultimate and snow leopard on my macbook pro, if im just playing stars or tilt or making some music i normally boot under Osx but if im playing some random euro sites i can just boot into windows and can play pc games too win win situation imo
  12. If my memory serves me correctly -

    pokerstars - Same for Mac/PC
    FullTilt - Same for Mac/PC
Bodog - Only PC, but has 1 Table of Cash available in flash for .com and co.uk players
Absolute - PC/Mac seems to be available now.
titan poker - PC/Pretty sure they have a Mac version
    partypoker - PC/No Mac i believe

I dont think the merge/cereus/ipoker networks have it, but i could be wrong.

They arent that expensive if you compare features and factor in reliability.
  13. I always hate these convos because the mac fans refuse to understand they are getting ripped off but here it goes...Buy a PC with windows 7:

    1) Its cheaper for the EXACT SAME HARDWARE. With a mac you have to bring it in to get work done if something goes wrong. On a PC you can just replace whatever is wrong yourself. You also have WWAAYY more options for upgrading hardware in the future with PC. You could also build a hackintosh if you really wanted the best of both worlds. I built one a while back for $800 that rivaled most higher end mac pros.
    2) OSX isn't compatible with HEM, PT, or PO. So basically you are stuck doing things by hand. It also can't run table ninja.
    3) Windows is the most used operating system in the world and its not even close. Therefore software developers generally always aim at Microsoft first.
    4) Windows 7 is above and beyond the best Microsoft OS to date. Its stable, fast, and doesn't run a lot of trash in the background.
    5) lastly, lol at the people who buy mac to just install parallels or windows. Your just burning money, don't burn money...

My last huge gripe with mac and OSX is that everything is close sourced. Maybe I am especially bitter because I own an iphone (along with an imac) and the limitations set by mac is ridiculous. I mean how can you not allow flash on a phone and still remain compatible?!?!? Obviously they are good at marketing and some how continue to brain wash their "prosumer" following.

    cant compare to pc's imo

The reason PC'S go haywire is because A. People are stupid and don't realize that computers, like cars, require user maintenance. You can't look up porn and click every pop-up that comes up and download every single thing Internet Explorer throws at you without realizing that consequences will ensue.

    B. There are more Pc's than macs thus more stories of PC's crashing. (This is the same for pit-bull attacks... 10x as many pit-bulls as any other dog thus more pitbull attacks.)

    C. If Macs "Just work" then why does apple have a technical support dept.?

    Reason: grammar
  17. i just got an iMac and its the greatest thing ever, i've come across two flaws and everything else is 100000000 times better...1 flaw is that the only sites you can play are UB, tilt and stars and 2nd is that if ur deep in a mtt and u gotta poo, ur gunna have problems

They are if there are programs hat you use that you can't get for Mac

My Wife's business accounting software is a few years old and is not migrate-able to the latest version of it on Mac. We would have o buy the windows version and upgrade the file formats, then migrate to Mac(its also same situation forwin7 as the software company didn't do any support for win7 on old version as its end of life)

Its more of an ease of use thing for me. I'm the on who has to "fix" things if they don't run properly and with PC's it means a lot of maintenance on an old machine like ours. If the PC s running slow, it could be a day or so to get it running fast enough to keep the wife happy.

We'll be upgrading in a few months and i'll be pushing for Mac because it hink the difference in $$ is offset by that beautiful 27 inch monster resolution display.

If i already had a good HD high res monitor then i'd probably stick to PC
  19. Thanks for all the feedback. Very Helpful!!

Well that makes two of us then...Anyone who builds computers or fixes them for a living knows mac is overpriced. Here I will help you out since you seem to be ill informed. Apple doesn't build any hardware...Most of the apple fan base doesn't understand this so consider yourself informed. Apple buys their parts from companies like Intel and ATI and then assembles their "ground breaking systems" in factories. When you buy apple computers you are paying an expensive price for OSX (their operating system) which is really based on linux.

I consider myself a conservative and try to save money where ever I can. So in terms of flexibility and compatibility I use a windows 7 based system that I built myself. I never run into any issues and I have had my computer for 6 years. None of those years btw have I ever installed anti-virus software. I guess I'm not a button clicking moron who needs an operating system like OSX to protect me. When I am in the field and servicing other computers I use a linux based laptop. Which in terms of security/reliability linux PWNS everyone.
  22. revolvingris is oblivious to life...if u've had the same computer for 6 years then ur wayyy out of date...i have an iMac and a vaio for portability...the iMac shits on any computer there is...revolvingiris is a stupid idiot who just wants to make an argument out of nothing because u cant compare macs to pc...macs cum
  23. Macs are totally OVERRATED
  24. I use both PC and Mac. For a laptop, the MBP can't be beat. I know it's expensive and I'm paying a huge markup for the hardware I'm getting. But the non-computing hardware is just way better. If I spend, say, double (which is about what it was compared to a similar spec PC), that extra thousand dollars spread over two years is a few dollars per day. And if you factor in that the mac holds value better and has a higher resale price, it actually costs me about $200 per year to have a Mac laptop instead of a PC. Considering I use my laptop every day and I blow money on dumb shit all the time, this seems like a silly easy investment.

  25. most ppl i know end up installing windows on their mac because they eventually come across something they need that's not supported by mac. so prepare a few hundred bucks on top of that laptop price.
