Incentive for corruption?

    In the past when people have suggested that online poker is rigged, I like everyone else who was not a fish being gobbled up routinely the poker gods replied "They have everything to lose and so very little to gain" The recent scandals however, have given me pause to so hastily dismiss the possibility.

    My basic thought here is that if sites like Ub consistently are paying out more in gaurantees than they are receiving in entry fees, does that not give them an incentive to have players working for the site that have an advantage? I would have to say that the gaurantees on UB almost never are covered by the entry fees. Am I way off base here? Is the conventional wisdom here that"they profit SO much from the raked games that they can afford to lose money on the gaurantees"?

    I am not a conspracy guy, but I would feel better if I could see how the sites are very profitable running a fair game.

    Well, long term, the site isn't going to lose on guarantees, and cover it from other games, unless that tournaments and overlays are measurably bringing people to the other games.

    The idea of having an overlay, etc, is to gain some press for your site, so that you can get more players to the site. The overlays are an investment in the future.

    By that logic, having people with an unfair advantage on the site would be counterproductive. Whatever money you make doing this would be lost many times over if you were caught. Take a look, UB has taken a beating after their scandal. There was a time that I would have said they were the 2nd most played site of P5 players, I wouldn't say that now, even when US players have many less options.

    Thanks for your thoughts, LX101, makes sense. Admittedly I am an easy sale though since like I said (and spelled incorrectly) I am not a conspiracy guy.
