Hey, this is a hand from a $20 deepstacks tourny I played on stars last night. I would like to know what people would have done in my situation. What mistakes did I make etc. I'll post what I was thinking during the hand in white text next to the arrows in the hand history. So you can just highlight it to see my thoughts.

Bauke85: folds
hans001: calls 200
lilluu: folds
Lplated: folds
Lplated is sitting out
Panterinha: folds
emufart69: calls 200 <--- I just limp in, set mining in hopes to take down a big
pzampa1: calls 100 pot if I hit. I'll most likely throw my hand away if I miss.
taddaeus: checks
*** FLOP *** [5d 6d 7s]
pzampa1: checks <--- Bingo, I hit my set, but its a dirty board. I stick in a
taddaeus: checks pretty fat raise to make the draws pay. How much would
hans001: bets 600 you raise here? Now taddaeus check-called my big raise.
emufart69: raises 1400 to 2000 What range do you put him on here? I thought possibly
pzampa1: folds slowplaying nut straight, or more likely a draw. Probably
taddaeus: calls 2000 just an 8 in his hand, or 2 diamonds. I don't put
hans001: folds him on any sort of pair, 2 pair, or set kind of hand here.
*** TURN *** [5d 6d 7s] [8h]
taddaeus: checks <--------------- Ok, the 8 hits the turn. This looks bad, but I
Lplated has returned Wasn't really afraid of it. The only draws it
emufart69: bets 3200 completes is a gutshot, and the lower end of
taddaeus: raises 11550 to 14750 and is all-in the open ender, both of which seem to be
emufart69: ??? unlikely holdings. So i bet, trying to make
the flush draw pay and hoping he might stay around if hes just caught a pair of 8s. Do you bet here? Or do you just check, if so what do you do on the river? His shove on the turn to my bet was a bit of a surprise. What do you put him on now? Do you call or fold? I would have to call pretty much my whole stack off. 11550 chips into a pot that would then be 34900. So I have to win about 1 in 3 times to break even. I'm not getting the correct odds to draw if he has the made straight. But if I call and win, I would be coming 2nd in chips, with a great chance to go deep. I thought he most likely was semi-bluffing with a flush draw, trying to represent the straight. Or less likely hes caught his miricle gutshot.
So. your thoughts? I'll post the rest of the hand history later. -

I think with this scarry board you would have been better to check behind.
Since you re-openned the betting you're commited to going for the gold. If you're behind, you have 10 outs to quads or full house. It's to early to think about laddering up the pay charts. As you said you're playing to win. If you win this hand, you're in position to make a run at the tournament.
If you check behind, you trap the opponent for all his chips when he bets the river (when board pairs). If he pushes the river and you haven't improved, you have to make a judgement on whether to call the river. Of course he may go for the check raise on the river & then you can safely check behind and win if you hold the best hand. -
Well, in my opinion, you are an absolute donkey. Usually when the turn fills a draw, which obviously it did, then I would usually CHECK then to see what your opponent would do, that way you are minimising your losses. I would just check call a bet, hoping for the board to pair on the river. If you don't boat up you can easily throw your hand away, regardless if you have put over 50% of your chips in the pot already.
Thats what i think. Thats how 1mper1um would play it thats for sure.
