I was at Foxwoods a bit ago and playing 1/2 no limit, 60-300 buy in. I was very deepstacked (about 2k) and had a mix of red chips, $5, Greens, $25, Blacks $100 and a Purple chip $500 (with a hologram in the middle of the chip) for [censored] and giggles.
I am a very LAG player (yes i am Asian and cut my eye-teeth on west coast poker) guy with about 1K in front of him raises 15 pre flop on the button, I call with 5 7 suited one other player in as well.
Flop comes 6 8 queen, he throws out a $40 dollar bet, I call, 3rd guy folds. Turn comes money card of 4 off suit, two flush at this point but I know that this guy has an over pair, maybe even trip queens. I check he bets $60 dollars, so at this point I believe that he has an over pair, kings or aces, because this guy has been cautious with over pairs before as well. I raise to about 150 at this point, he thinks a bit and just smooth calls.
River some 2 off suit, so I have the nuts at this point, I then grab a purple chip $500 and toss it out with no declaration of the amount, and the chip kind of rolls off to the side of the pot and is not partially blocked by the dealer, dealer softly declares the bet of 5 hundred, but has a chinese accent. The other guy insta calls (and verbally says call) and then puts out 4 green chips $25 for just one hundred in the pot. Dealer then repeats the bet of "Five Hundred" out loud and says that it is a called hand. All of a sudden the other player then freaks out and says "WHAT five hundred? I thought it was a one hundred dollar bet???" I then point out that the black chips are nothing like the purple chips and that the bet is $500. At this point the hands have also been shown, he had aces, I of course had the nut straight. The other player is still freaking out at this time, blaming the dealer for not verbalizing the bet clearly. Floor is then promptly called. Floor rules after hearing all the info that verbal bets are binding and it is a called bet on the river.
Now at this point what would you do in my situation? The guy has been a really live player, and obviously willing to risk quite a bit with one pair, but he has been friendly and has donated quite a bit to the table at the time. He genuinely thought that the bet was one hundred, not five hundred, and pointed out that purple chips are not commonly seen on a 1/2 table (on a side note, floor then made me color down the purple chip to black chips after this incident).
I will update this later tonight with what actually happened later.
Cliff Notes:
I make nut straight, other player has Aces, big bet on river is called, but other player thinks bet is 100 instead of 500. Chaos ensues -
take a left turn on PD street....
-
I say ship it and rake in the monster pot.
-
Guy could have asked the dealer to repeat what he said before declaring 'call'. I don't see what recourse he has here, maybe I buy him dinner or something. Ship it, and AA guy can chalk it up as a lesson learned, fairly cheaply, actually. Pay attention, or pay Shag.
-
tell the floor to watch your chips... eat buffet, look up escorts, and when you go back hope he is still there.
-
I think i would toss him $50 and tell him dinner is on you. He'll either be gracious and accept or throw it back at you and tell you to die in fire.
-
i'd give him the 400 dollars. Here is why:
You making that extra 400 won't really matter in the grand scheme of things
That 400 he lost will ruin his night -
Very interesting indeed.
Foxwoods is my home base and I started playing 1-2nl before it was min$40max$100 and since moved up to 2-5nl.
Purple $500 chips are NEVER seen in 1-2 OR even 2-5. Its tough that the chip landed when it did but, I would think that would stand out. Ive seen some outrageous floor rulings in that room however. If dealer said "Five HUNDRED" thats what he said.
You had the right read on the WHOLE hand (57o my fav hand), and knew you were gettin paid. But the $500 chip maybe shouldnt have been in play.
NH tho. -
For the larger denomination chips to be in play, I always color up if I have a large amount of hundred dollar bills, I found that at that level, and 2/5 and 5/10 for me, I bet differently when I throw in cash, versus chips, the cash just has too much value in my mind versus chips. Or I will buy the purple from the tray to help the dealers and floor out in 1/2 because the purple chip throws off the tray count by a lot.
And the dealer does have an accent, and I guess the player was so focused he only heard the hundred part, and not the five that preceded it. -
To me, theres no issue here. You threw out a chip without declaring an amount, that amount is the raise. The dealer declared it, and it was called. Thats IT, baby. End of story. No arguments to be had.
If at any time I'm at a table with a dealer I cannot understand well (it does happen a bit), I am 100% sure I know what he just said everytime I have to make a decision. If there is ANY doubt in my mind about what I just heard, I ask 100% of the time I am in the hand. I'm sure that I am percieved as a racist or small-minded American, but I won't lose money just because the dealer and my first languages are not the same. ALWAYS ASK!!!!!
That guy obviously got too excited with rockets to think enough to ask, and felt kicked in the balls not only cause they got cracked, but because he wasn't keeping himself up with the action.
He's out an extra 400 bucks, and that sucks, but it was a cheap way for him to learn the lesson.
WP you! -
If he's as friendly and fishy as you say, i'd offer to give him back $200, half the difference. Peace on Earth, good will to men and such. Having a charitable reputation may make some people more willing to lose lots of money to you.

Wow no shit, this is what actually happened on the riv.
So like I said, there was an interesting Karma situation by the riv.
After floor ruled correctly that the 500 bet stands, the other guy was so distraught, and counting out his chips, this guy wasn't a douchebag, just made a four hundred dollar mistake, So I made a deal with him, offered to buy him out of the bet for $300 instead of $500, so he got to keep $200 of the bet.
I know that of course poker is about being competitive and trying to stack people, but in my mind it was an honest mistake (though stupid) and I was really up for the weekend, so I was willing to cut the guy some slack... Though I did end up stacking him later that night... -
i bet if his AA was good that he have no prob agreeing he calld the 500 bet make hiim pay an say thanks for the hoooker
-
wow dude, thats a class act move on ur part I say (serious, no sarcasm), wp.

and in the grand scheme of things it obv didn't matter in the end
-
$200 is exactly what I would've done. Pay him for half his mistake (he was willing to call 100) since he was a nice guy and donating, then hope that cools him down enough to have him rebuy.
-
But his night being ruined won't really matter in the grand scheme of things either
-
I dont think Ive ever seen a Purple Chip on a 1/2 Game before there. (Or Black Chips for that matter) Basically the Purple Chips look nothing like the Black Chips so hes a moron.. Your title is misleading as there is no Verbal Bet there. You just threw out the chip. Thats the bet. Oh well..
AF -
cliff notes
Shag = Class act
Guy = keeping his head more in the game
Karma = appeased
paying attention = +EV -
I don't know how many live games are like this, but at the Bellagio if you say "all in" you can just push a portion of your stack over the bet line. You don't have to push all your chips over the bet line to complete the bet. The dealer repeats the "all in" bet too. Several times I've seen people not pay attention to the verbal bet - headphones, talking to other people, drunk - and say "call" and then push in chips equal to whatever the "all in" better pushed. Cards are flipped and it gets ugly when they lose. I've never seen anyone win in this situation when they are calling an "all in" bet, thinking it's something smaller.
-
^^^^^^ +1
-
You did nothing wrong and he clearly did. He shouldn't be allowed to get away with his mistake, he was clearly not paying enough attention and it is his own fault that he didn't realise the amount of the bet. Keep the money obv.
-
No offense, but you take the pot, get up and go home...because you played the hand horribly and got pretty lucky!
Also, LOL at people sitting with $2k at a foxwoods 1/2 game. I have been to Foxwoods 100 million times and have NEVER seen anyone with $2k at a 1/2 game. Not calling you a liar, just stating that its a very rare thing. But then again, you guys from Wellesly can afford it ;-) -

how so supermoves? -
lol, love the wellesley stereotype jab, (even though both my parents were docs...)
But I have had over 3.5k at a 1/2 table before, granted I was on a 36 hour session where I could not miss ANYTHING.
Oh and how did I play the hand incorrectly? I already identified myself as an asian lag player. So calling with a suited one gapper is quite within my range, even out of position. I correctly placed him on either an overpair, or set on the flop and new that if I hit my 8 outs that I could take a huge chunk of this gentlemen's stack because he way overvalued over pairs.
Anyway else I played the hand horribly? -
Villain's fault, he needs to pay attention, lesson learned, keep the $500.
If you were bluffing the $500 on the river and he called $100 and was the winner he ain't letting you off the hook dude so don't burn money, you won, keep it. -
SHAG,,
i think u played it very well, nice job. I play down at greektown casino in detroit, i honestly have never seen a purple chip in play there or in the dealers drawer. (i play the 2,5 blinds; 100-300 buyin) so thats probably why too, but thats the highest game there have there that is always playing.... you were very kind in giving him any money back at all,,, however if you believe in karma and you think he honestly made a mistake and wasnt trying to get out of paying $400 more then KARMA will pay you back... and it looks like u stacked him anyways, so nice job, class act imo, as long as you feel that what you did is right then it is fine,,, what did the villain say after you let him keep $200 of it? did he thank you? what did he do? just curious
