  1. Last night was the first Aruba super satellite, and i found myself playing, only out of habit, not out of common sense. I believe I will probably play in the buy in only Aruba tournaments in the future... (UB offers two seperate Aruba tournaments, one that pays a $9000 package, entry, airfare and hotel, and another tournament that only pays the $5200 main event buy in). My reasoning is this.... UB has changed the rules to allow only one win in the $9000 tournament, where in the past you could win multiple times and receive cash for any subsequent wins. However, in the buy in only tournament you can win multiple times. The powers that be at UB have seen fit to do this because last year they had a difficult time filling seats for their main event, partially according to their rationale, because too many people won multiple seats... I have given a lot of thought to this... I respect all of the people at UB, and it will always be my favorite site, because sooooo many of the players their are my friends, but I still think it is a bad decision, because I do not really think it will solve their problem. Without the regulars playing, they will consistently have trouble offering tournaments that pay out more than 1 seat. Not a very good expected value if you take your poker seriously, which I do. UB will have Arubas that attract a field of 80- 150 on average, so that will leave them with either an overlay where they pay out more than they take in (which happened frequently last year) or it will leave the players with the prospect of having to negotiate a field of talented players only to have ONE prize available plus some minor cash for finishing close.... I have no desire to play for 4 - 5 hours, finish 2nd, and get 200 bucks or something like that, and 1st paid a 9k package... yuck!

If you think about it logically, the good players will win their seat, and then not be eligible to play anymore. So field sizes will be down, and UB will have overlay issues... The bottom line is no other site (to my knowledge) excludes players from winning any super satellite multiple times. I was lucky enough to win my WSOP seat several times at party last year, banking an additional 12K for each subsequent win. One of the big attractions of the Party WSOP super satellites was that many times their mega supers offered 30-35 WSOP seats! That is why so many times they had huge fields... ( if you build it they will come?). Yes, some players will always complain that winners should be excluded, that they want their shot, but you know what? SCREW THAT. I'm a little short dude, but I can't complain to the NBA that it isn't fair that I can't play for the Lakers because the tall guys have an unfair advantage. I can't complain to the PGA that Tiger Woods should have to play left handed, because I'm not as accurate as he is... NO LEGITIMATE OPEN CONTEST OF ANY KIND SHOULD EVER TRY TO LIMIT THE COMPETITION LEVEL ELIGIBLE TO PLAY. IF UB is having trouble filling seats then they need to come up with a better gameplan! Whats next, winning players start with less chips? Or maybe we can only look at one card ( yes, i have done this, doh) ?

OK, enough bitching, here is my take on how to solve the problem.....

1). Offer more feeders, and higher buy in super satellites. Yes, i do see UB is now offering turbos to their $200 Aruba, big whoop de do. So now they will have 150-250 in the $200 Aruba super, wow a whole two seats will be paid out! How about having feeders to a bi-monthly mega super? One with say a 500-600 buy in? One that will pay out 5-6 seats? Don't tell me this is not viable. Both Party and stars consistently run mega supers for their events, and it gets huge fields at $650 a pop.

2.) If they still want to have special consideration for those who have not won a seat, then offer their "first timers only" Aruba super satellites, as they did last year. DO NOT EXCLUDE THE MAINSTAY PLAYERS AT YOUR SITE! Offer a few first timer supers every week, as well as the regular Aruba supers for everyone.

I really truly love UB, but now I'm getting worked up again....

Yes, i know, I didn't even get to the two interesting hands against JSUP, I'll post that in a little bit.... I'll bet his head was spinning over my decisions on a couple of hands....

  2. God your long winded.
  3. Adam, Riley, and I were talking about this just yesterday. We also felt that UB should offer one or two satellites per week that only first-timers can win, and the rest should be a free for all.

If they continue to exclude winners, theyre going to get to a point where 30-40 regulars (ppl who would have taken a shot at multiple Aruba packages) will no longer be eligible to play. In a $200 buyin, these guys alone nearly constitute an extra prize package.

The big name players winning multiple events also generated a buzz about the Aruba satellites. Last year on UB you could often see random ppl chatting about how many Arubas some players have won.

If anyone out there from UB is watching, perhaps you should take these suggestions to heart. Multiple Arubas for Everyone!

  4. When I first started noticing the Tournament Lobby for satellites into Main Event of Tunica, Bellagio and Foxwoods started saying "Multiple Winners will not be credited with cash to their accounts", I figured, well thats okay... its not UB.com's tourney to run so they can't give cash for these seats. I thought to myself, since Aruba is UB.com's event, they can run as many satellites as they want or give cash for a second win and up. Then last week and new rules came, and... I was wrong.

This is a terrible idea for two reasons... 1) brsavage is right that the fields in these $100 and $200 tourneys were filled with previous winners, which even if they didnt win again, built the purse money to cover the $10K package. 2) and CAL is right, there was a HUGE buzz around the Aruba winners each night, and it made everyone else want to join the fun. I even went on to finally win an Aruba Package myself just so I could feel the rush. Strange switch on UB.com's part, not sure why...

    --Dumb Walrus--

partypoker can afford to run $650 buy-ins brsavage because they have 40,000+ online as you know, but they seem to fill up $9 satellites to most of their tourneys when UB.com is usually $3 or $5. Seems to make a big difference in the # of seats in big event.
